Accept a Call From Stand Up To Cancer and Jon Snow Next Week

Remember sitting around the TV during PBS telethons as a kid? No? Seriously, you can’t be that much younger than us. If you have willfully blocked memories of these events from your memory, get ready for telethoning in the 21st century from Stand Up To Cancer.

Instead of tuxedoed stars you barely recognize sitting behind rotary phones collecting your pledges, Stand Up To Cancer, the 501c3 nonprofit that raises money to further research of groundbreaking cancer treatments in hopes of getting them to patients sooner, is working with celebrities you hold near and dear (and probably have a poster of on your wall) so that you can interact with them one-on-one through a digital lounge hosted by Katie Couric. The live event is called We’re Calling You and will be held on Friday, September 5th.

In the digital lounge, celebrities from your favorite shows including Game of Thrones, True Blood and Arrested Development, will be reaching out directly to you, the fans, through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms in addition to the traditional phones. That’s right: you could get a call from Jon Snow or Storm. Imagine telling your friends you spoke to a member of the X-Men.

You can sign up to be part of the event – and be contacted by one of the celebrity guests – by visiting http://www.werecallingyou.org/ and filling out the simple form.

All of this is happening next Friday, September 5th, at 8pm ET/5pm PT, and in a true show of support for this wonderful cause, the list of cable and broadcast networks that will be simultaneously airing this event – commercial free even – is long: ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, along with ABC Family, American Forces Network, Bravo, Cooking Channel, Discovery Fit & Health, E!, Encore, Encore Espanol, EPIX, ESPNEWS, FOX Sports 2, FXM, HBO, HBO Latino, ION Television, LMN, Logo TV, MLB Network, National Geographic Channel, Oxygen, Palladia, Pivot, SHOWTIME, Smithsonian Channel, Starz, TNT and VH1. It will also stream live on both Hulu and Yahoo if you’re a cord cutter like this writer. The live event will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

You can follow along during the event on Stand Up To Cancer’s social feeds: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

We here at Nerdist are proud supporters of Stand Up To Cancer, and we hope you will take the chance to get involved. Cancer touches so many lives, and through the research supported by this organization, lives will be saved. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Buster may not be sure how he’s going to get the numbers, but he wants to talk to you. And the Game of Thrones cast is down for joining you in this digital hangout.
