Disneyland opened its gates on July 17, 1955. Even though that was 61 years ago, the park is continuing its 60th anniversary celebration throughout most of 2016. It’s sort of like when you declare the whole month of your birthday a special occasion, just on a larger scale. The 60th anniversary party includes special sparkly decorations at the Anaheim theme park, including a bedazzled overlay on Sleeping Beauty’s castle, as well as themed food and merchandise and new entertainment. All of that will be highlighted in an upcoming special on ABC called The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60.
The special will talk about Walt Disney’s dream and commemorate the 60th milestone with a “star-studded Diamond Anniversary” event. Performers will be announced soon. The show will take place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater and in memorable locations throughout Disneyland, such as the castle and Main Street USA. California Adventure’s Cars Land will be highlighted, too. Yes, California Adventure is included in the 60th shindig even though it didn’t open until 2001. I guess the park is technically part of the Disneyland Resort.
I expect the special to dive into the history of Disneyland as it looks back on the last 60 years and how the park has evolved. They’ll also focus on the present by highlighting the new Paint the Night parade and World of Color.
The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60 will air on ABC on February 21 at 8:00pm. If you want to experience the Diamond Celebration in person, visit Disneyland before September 5.
Will you be tuning into the Disneyland special? Head to the comments and raise your mouse ears into the air if so.
