Abandon All Hope: Nickelback Has A Disco Song Called ‘She Keeps Me Up’

Matt Grosinger, Jesse McKeil, and Ben Mekler weigh in on this baffling video.

The last time I started a post with an apology was when I wrote about Rebecca Black’s “Friday”, but I am afraid I am going to have do it again today. I am so sorry. Nickelback has released a brand new video for their song “She Keeps Me Up” and there are so many things wrong with it. The first being the fact that exists at all, but the list extends far beyond that. Quite frankly, I am not even mad about it; I am just exhausted.

All I have are questions. Why did they attempt to change their sound from “shitty” to “shittier” two decades into their torturously long and fruitful career. Why did Chad Kroeger cut off his hair and frost his tips. Did they really think that supergluing disco ball mirrors to shit would make the song seem like a convincing disco track? Will that bartender ever stop twirling flaming bottles and pour any of the five concert attendees a goddamn drink? Be a professional for god’s sake–at least one person in the video should be.

Oh and I lied: I’m mad.

  1. Christoper says:

Is he just talking about doing blow with Avril? Like, on the kitchen counter, perhaps?

  2. jim says:

What is it with 20 somethings hating on Nickleback.  It’s old and lame.  Be original, dumbass.

  3. jake says:

that video was indicative of everything that is wrong with the world, and if you enjoyed it you are part of the problem.
“funky little monkeyeverybody wants to be the sistas mistacoca cola rolla coasta”
    i want to die

  4. Ethan says:

I Normally agree with a majority of things posted on nerdist,  but this has got to be the worst thing you’ve ever posted. No, not the song. I love the song and love nickelback. If you guys at nerdist or at least the ones who wrote the article don’t like them, why bother posting it in the first place? Oh I know, so you can get more hits and shit like that. I don’t appreciate you slandering a song that one think is fucking awesome or a group I love. The fact that I’m from Canada and they are a Canadian band is irrelevant too. You guys are entitled to your opinions but if all you’re gonna do is hate on certain things keep it to yourselves. Try seeing how Kruger and company handle a live show and then tell me you still don’t at least respect how they put on a show.

  5. Midiga says:

He doesn’t really have the voice to transition this into disco, and the beat is to much on the rock side. But i do hear the similarities to disco in it so I’m not going to say it is a bad song in the least.

  6. Tim says:

So wait!  You are so “tolerant” of wackiness such as high jacking of marriage, lifestyle choice and who knows what else but you draw the tolerance line here!?

  7. Abbie says:

I dont understand why you are mad, but then, I like Nickelback and I liked this song. In fact, I liked the whole album. If you don’t like it, don’t listen/watch.

  8. Derek says:

This is… interesting. I don’t mind Nickel OMG Was that Nic Cage out on the dance floor?!

  9. Beth says:

I could only make it to two minutes of that video. O the humanity!

  10. Saeed says:

It’s definitely not my type of music, and I can’t say that I really cared for it. But it wasn’t really THAAAAAT bad. I can see younger kids enjoying it, and that’s perfectly fine by me.

  11. Fin says:

It’s not my kind of music, but so what? I don’t come to The Nerdist to hear hipsters take dumps on people. I hold Hardwick to a higher standard and so too those under his umbrella. Please retract my page view.

  12. l-dawg says:

God i hope this is some kind of parody

  13. Lily says:

How is that different from Maroon 5? Neither is my thing but, it’s not that terrible.

  14. Warewolf says:

Seemed alright to me. Chorus catchy. Think Matt maybe one of those sheep following everyone else hating or loving cus some others do.

  15. mrjeeks says:

When did Chris Hardwick become the lead singer of Nickleback? Don’t you have enough jobs, Chris?

  16. Moneypenny says:

I keep trying to pay attention to how corny the video is, but I keep getting distracted by how awful the lyrics are.  Yikes.

  17. KJ says:

“I am so high, I could hear heaven.” – Anonymous
But seriously, if this was 1997 and on VH1, this would be standard video fare. It’s retro-90’s, but retro-90’s-as-retro-70’s.

  18. Vitaliy Mityushin says:

Yeah it’s real easy to sit back in your offices and bash on an artist like that. I’d like to see Matt, Jesse and Ben come up with something better. Look, I get it it’s Nickelback, they’re not exactly going to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame anytime soon, but did you guys have to be so cruel? I am by no means a Nickelback fan but I honestly felt bad for them the way you distastefully shat on their career. And such an easy target too, you guys can do better. Even Chad Kroeger has feelings guys and without him you three wouldn’t even have a blog to post. Having met Chris he is one of the nicest most down to Earth people I’ve met and I’m a bit shocked you three pricks even got hired to work for such a good guy. As always “enjoy your burrito!”

  19. huckleberry42 says:

    Meh

  20. H. says:

One sort of redeeming quality of the vid was the bartender was playing with Molotov cocktails.  He literally was juggling with the power to take down the whole operation but didn’t and that was disappointing.

  21. Kyle says:

You’re entitled to your opinion, Matt Grosinger (whoever you are), but still…hating on Nickelback is so lame. Hell, hating on ANY band is so lame. WHy don’t you just keep writing articles about bands I don’t know or care about? Even though I don’t like those bands doesn’t mean I don’t think it shouldn’t exist. People should be able to like what they like. Keep going with your hipster negativity though. It’s pretty cool.

  22. sharadoc says:

My guess, Canadian Maroon 5 meets wife Avril Lavigne.

  23. Jeremy says:

    J

  24. Derek says:

No matter what you think of Nickelback, they’re nowhere near as bad as My Darkest Days.

  25. S says:

Why aren’t music artist aloud to experiment with their sound?? Everytime one of them dose a bunch of people get their panties in a wad. If you don’t like it don’t listen to it. I say good for them for trying something new. I may not like it but someone out there might.

  26. Zach says:

This song is awesome! NB gets too much hate.

    • K says:

They have sold over 23 million albums in the US.  They get MUCH more love than hate.  People just think they are cool by hating on them.  They actually just seem silly by doing so.

    • Brock says:

Actually, Nickelback said that they love their haters. They have them to thank for the band staying in the spotlight so often,

  27. T says:

    Still better than Beiber
