A True Archery Master Can Hit an Aspirin Tablet in Mid-Air

What would a modern-day Robin Hood look like? Would it be someone who could fire arrows with the speed of Lars Anderson, Danish LARPing legend? Or would that someone be more of a dead-shot, with the ability to hit almost any sized target?

Since we know the former can sure as Sherwood handle a bow (despite what other archers might say), maybe we should see just how impressive the latter can be.

In the latest video from the tremendously interesting YouTube channel SmarterEveryDay, we are treated to an exhibition shooting demonstration from Byron Ferguson, who our host Destin enthusiastically calls “the most amazing archer”:

The way that the video quantifies the difficulty of hitting smaller and smaller targets is really interesting. It’s called “circle packing.” And while we haven’t actually figured out what the best way to pack circles together is, using the cross-section of Byron’s arrow in the geometry gives us an instantly understandable idea of how hard it is to hit a target.

Byron’s advice for hitting even tiny targets is just as clear. If you are already aiming for the exact center of everything, then the target’s size shouldn’t matter — the center of a beach ball is just as big as the center of an aspirin tablet.

I have watched Byron perform live several time, truly truly amazing! I still have a  nickel with a dent in it.

You should see what the late and great Bob Munden could do with firearms.
