A TARDIS For Charity

We’ve previously noted that BBC America is running a TARDIS-building contest, and I’m sure you’re all hard at work on your entries.  But if you’re not going solo, there’s an interesting project going on up in Seattle, and you might want to pitch in with it.

Here’s what’s up: The folks at GeekGirlCon, the group that’s been formed to promote women’s contributions to nerd culture and is holding its first convention this year, are building their own TARDIS for the contest, but the goal isn’t really to win as much as it is to build it within four weeks and have fun doing it.  They’ll be starting the construction on February 22nd — this coming Tuesday — at 6:30 pm (PT) at the home of Volunteer Coordinator and Secretary Julia Santo, and will continue every Tuesday until they’re done.  And then, the finished product will be auctioned off at GeekGirlCon in October, with proceeds to go to special needs children’s charities.

And then there’s this, from their press release: “Along with the money raised for the TARDIS, GeekGirlCon would like to ask their followers to think of what made them a geek. Be it Star Trek, comics, math class, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, people are encouraged to purchase an item that represents that fandom.  These items will be placed inside the TARDIS and then also donated to charity, encouraging a new geek generation.”  You can send those items to GeekGirlCon, 815 1st Avenue, #315, Seattle, WA 98104-1404.

If you’re into it, drop Julia an e-mail at [email protected] for directions, and check out their Facebook event page for further information.  And if you’re doing your own TARDIS and looking for inspiration or help, you could do a lot worse than to follow their lead and do something that’ll result in good things for your community.  If you do, let us know ([email protected] will do).

Awwwwwww…thanks for posting this project on your bloggity! Who’d have thought that Geek Girl Con would have gotten this big? Appreciate your support and your nerd wisdom.

What made me a nerd? Science. Or better yet, understanding science. Which in turn made my little geeklings understand science. Who are both now showing their science skills off in school. The older one (12) is excelling in advanced science class in middle school and the other (9 & autistic) in engineering his own blueprints for Rube Goldberg machines.

I encourage them to be proud of being smart and creative…being a geek mom is important to me. Nerd is a compliment in our home.

What made me a nerd? One word. YouTube. (Not the cats playing with yarn crap, the community stuff.)

My first taste of geekdom was reading Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. 🙂
