In 2011, audiences were taken back to the past 8-minutes at a time in the form of Duncan Jones’ sophomore feature film effort, Source Code. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Colter Stevens, the film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget of just $32 million. Because of that profit margin, it wasn’t surprising when word came out a CBS TV series was in development based on the film. However, those plans never materialized and Source Code went back to being just a really cool one-off time travel film… but that status might be on the verge of changing yet again.

According to a new report from Variety, The Mark Gordon Company and Vendome Pictures have set in motion plans for a follow-up to the film that will see the return of original screenwriter Ben Ripley, but not director Duncan Jones (who’s currently off working with mystical creatures in World of Warcraft). Instead, the directorial chair will be filled by Outlander director Anna Foerster, with no cast currently confirmed.

There are many directions the new film could take. On the one hand, we could be put back into the alternate reality of the new universe seen at the end of film where Stevens had yet to be awoken because the original Stevens stopped the train bombing from ever taken place. On another, we could be taken back through the Source Code itself with a new character entirely that must learn how to navigate the system with the help of a new team at the controls. There’s always places to go when it comes to time travel stories, just ask the guys behind the new Terminator, so we’re sure Ben Ripley finding a new route to wade through.
