A RICK AND MORTY Fan Paid $14,700 For Some McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce

Most of us have gotten into eBay bidding wars and found ourselves putting more money on the line than we originally intended. Then there’s a particularly fervent Rick and Morty fan, who spent $14,700 not on human kidney or a lock of Chris Hemsworth’s hair, but on a sealed container of discontinued Szechuan Sauce from McDonald’s (via The A.V. Club). As you probably know, the 20-year-old dipping sauce is famously making headlines all these years later due to a reference in the third-season premiere of Rick and Morty, in which Rick says his life’s goal is to get his hands on the promotional Mulan tie-in sauce again. We don’t know if he’d pay $14k for it, though, or the equivalent amount in flurbos.

The seller apparently had a bit of luck stumbling upon this sauce, saying in the eBay item description that he came to have it thanks to a used car purchase:

“I just bought a really old car, while cleaning it I found a packet of this sauce. After watching the recent episode of Rick and Morty I went online to see if it was worth anything. Turns out it was. Also this comes with a packet of wasabi as well. I hope somebody who wants to eat some 20 year old gnarly sauce gets this.. I would prefer not to sell it to a collector.”

Bad news, buddy: We’re 99.9% positive this guy wasn’t just jonesing to taste a McDonald’s condiment from a couple decades ago. The good news for fans wanting to taste Szechuan Sauce is that fans have been working on recreating the recipe. Give that a go if you wish, and also give us a shout on Twitter and let us know what is the most you would pay for some honest-to-goodness Szechuan Sauce.
