A QUIET PLACE Is Officially Getting a Sequel!

Update, 8/29/18: In a new development that has us excited enough to scream—but we won’t! Nobody scream! Shhh!—Paramount Pictures has officially ordered a sequel for 2018’s surprise horror hit, A Quiet Place. Deadline reports that John Krasinski, who wrote, directed, and starred in the first film, will return to scripting duties for the follow-up, but the director’s chair is vacant at present.

There’s also no word just yet on whether the sequel will follow the first’s central family (or, spoilers, what’s left of them) or if it will simply take place in the same aurally-gifted-alien-infested world introduced in A Quiet Place. As producer Andrew Form told Collider, “We’re figuring out what everyone’s involvement’s gonna be and what the actual next movie’s gonna be.” The sequel is projected to hit theaters on May 15, 2020.

Previously:

If you were in an astonishingly quiet movie theater over the weekend then chances are good you were watching A Quiet Place, the new film by former star of The Office, John Krasinski. But the movie was anything but quiet on its way to box office domination and the best ever debut of an original horror flick. It’s the kind of success that means a sequel is probably inevitable. But did you know that A Quiet Place was almost part of another cinematic universe? Today’s Nerdist News is giving you the answers, very quietly.

Join guest host Amy “the Silence” Vorpahl, as she explains how A Quiet Place almost ended up as another Cloverfield sequel.  Screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods briefly considered finding a home for A Quiet Place in the Cloverfield franchise, and they’re very fortunate that Paramount never agreed with their initial vision. Now, instead of being a small part of someone else’s universe, A Quiet Place can potentially lead to more stories in its own franchise.

Of course, this also begs the question of whether we need A Quiet Place sequel. Simply setting up audiences with another family for 90 minutes of quiet time would feel like a repeat of the current film. Hollywood already has a tendency to make sequels for movies which have no business getting sequels. Even if we never revisited the world of A Quiet Place, this story feels complete.

However, we are intrigued by the idea of Krasinski returning to helm another Quiet Place movie, if only to see what he can do with an even larger budget and more resources. One way or another, the film will open more doors for Krasinski as both a star and a director.

What do you think about a potential sequel for A Quiet Place? Should this world continue or do you want it to stand alone forever? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
