Even if the name Scott Kelly doesn’t ring a bell, you’ve probably seen him before at some point over the past year, blowing your mind from the International Space Station by playing ping-pong with water, growing flowers in space, and otherwise enjoying how his body and other objects react in an environment without gravity.
His trip wasn’t a quick one: When he returned to Earth in March, he had been beyond our planet’s atmosphere for an entire year (technically, 340 days, but still). Most of us have a hard time halfheartedly keeping a New Year’s resolution for more than a week, so kudos, Kelly. If you think his story is fascinating, you and Hollywood are in the same boat: Sony Pictures has just won the rights to make a movie based on Kelly’s upcoming book, Endurance: My Year in Space.
The memoir, which Kelly is working on with Margaret Lazarus Dean, is currently scheduled for release in November 2017, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, will be about “Kellyâs early struggles as a C-student, his training as a Navy test pilot and the loving but highly competitive drive both he and his identical twin brother underwent to become astronauts.”
A couple months before his return, Kelly appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and answered some questions about being up in space: He didn’t enroll in a frequent flyer club, he didn’t get space madness, and there was no vodka up there. Check out that conversation below, and also feel free to live vicariously through Kelly’s amazing Instagram account.
And speaking of space, is the Flash fast enough to launch a rocket?
