A Little Glue, Some Iron Filings, and You Have DIY Magnetic Slime

When I was a kid, being “slimed” seemed like the single most exciting thing that could happen to a person. Whether it was on Nickelodeon‘s You Can’t Do That on Television, or Slimer getting Venkman in the first Ghostbusters, or the rest of the crew taking a swim in an actual river of slime in the sequel, it just seemed like the single most fun thing that could happen to you.

Then you grew up, and now you can’t even stand your hands getting a little sticky, and the slime dream died like so many other follies of youth.

But screw that, because I am going to make myself some homemade, do-it-yourself magnetic slime. Yeah, that’s right, this video teaches you how to make something that allows you to both mess around with that wonderful gooey substance and magnets. I still like playing with magnets.

Slime-magnet
This comes from Dave Hax on YouTube, and all you need to do is use some PVA glue (he used Elmer’s), add a little water, then pour some borax powder into water to make a solution that gets added to the glue. (If you don’t have borax powder available–because you’re a normal person–you can substitute a detergent that contains it).

Boom, you already have slime you can play with. To really make it magical though, i.e. magnetic, you simply fold in some iron filings (which again, you might not have handy because it’s weird to just own a bag of iron filings, but make it work, you know?).

As he points out if you try to save it long term it just turns into some weird caramel treat for robots, so make sure you maximize your fun the day you make it. Unless you do have a robot to feed. I don’t know, you’re the weirdo that owns borax powder and iron filings.

What would you do with magnetic slime? Tell us in the comments below.
