A Kurt Cobain Documentary Is Coming to HBO in 2015

The fallen patron saint of ’90s angst and teenage disillusionment, Kurt Cobain, is getting the comprehensive documentary treatment thanks to HBO and his own daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, in 2015. Titled Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the feature will take a deep look into the life of the Nirvana frontman by way of never before seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives, family archives, and songbooks.

Written, directed, and produced by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is the first of its kind to have the singer’s family’s cooperation, giving us a better understanding of the mystery behind one of culture’s most iconic musical figures of the last 30 years. Because of this, Morgen was given unfettered access to Cobain’s archives, bringing to light a more well-rounded look at the man than previously known.

According to Morgen, the project—which began eight years ago—was one he imagined wouldn’t go very far given the wealth of information already out there in the world about Cobain. However, he says, “once I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paintings, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media.”

There’s not yet a release date for the film beyond the ballpark of 2015. But it’ll likely be worth the wait, considering HBO is claiming the film will have dozens of Nirvana performances and songs involved and a few previously unreleased and never-before-heard songs of Cobain’s.

What’s your favorite Nirvana song? Leave it in the comments. And while you’re at it, listen to the documentary’s namesake mix, one which Kurt compiled as a teenager, below:
