A Killer Halloween Playlist from Our Favorite Independent Record Store

We love Origami Vinyl so much it is scary. The modest, LA-based independent record store has been curating excellent vinyl and organizing in-stores performances (Florence + The Machine and Jonsi are alums) at their Sunset location since 2009, and we have spent countless hours and dollars there with reckless abandon and absolutely no regrets. Though we find ourselves crate digging perennially for new releases and vintage LPs throughout the year, October is arguably the best month to head to the store, cause everyone is like:

You know by now that we love Halloween around these parts (say Nerdoween with me), but I would contend that OV manager Emily Twombly is just as stoked about the witching season as we are: last year she compiled both a Halloween party playlist and list of ghoulish records that will henceforth be staples of our October listening habits. Her wealth of knowledge about spooky tunes and haunted miscellany is, frankly, intimidating, so we requested her talents for yet another year of expertly curated Halloween music in playlist form. Below you’ll find an extensive 40-track playlist featuring a diverse cast of artists–everything between Nick Cave and Danny Elfman–as well as some ‘Ween odds and ends from pop culture. Let’s dive into this spookiness, shall we?

Pretty spooktacular playlist, amirite?? Going above and beyond, Emily also gathered a list of her favorite Halloween videos that weren’t on Spotify. You can find that list below this very cute picture of her and her best friend dressed as witches in 1991.

Emily says: “The Munsters theme song was so great. A little less goofy than The Addams Family. Eddie Munster had the original devillock inspiring goths and Doyle for years to come.”

Emily says: “The original ‘The Mummy’ by Bob McFadden & Dor is on the playlist but this version by The Fall is almost as perfect.

Emily says: “Written originally for Bing Crosby for Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad, this version by jazz singer, Kay Starr is my preferred version. The Betty Boop video that it’s paired with is giving Disney’s The Skeleton Dance a run for its money!!”

Emily says: “So that brings me to The Skeleton Dance, part of Disney’s Silly Symphony series.

Emily says: “This scene in the beginning of Friday The 13th: A New Beginning is everything! First of all, great song by Pseudo Echo, but more importantly, this girl has got MOVES. I could only hope to dance this well (and hopefully not be murdered afterward).”

Emily says: “And finally, one of the best scenes in one of the best movies of all time. (A close second would be SJP’s creepy song about kidnapping children.)

Now that you know what’s in our turntables this October, what’s spinning in yours? Please share your favorite Halloween albums in the comments below and on Twitter with the hashtag #Nerdoween!
