A JEOPARDY! Contestant Got Alex Trebek to Say ‘Turd Ferguson’

Imagine you’re a contestant on Jeopardy!. You’re $7,000 behind the player in second, and doubling your current cash total would only bump you up to $1,200. Alex Trebek just presented the Final Jeopardy! question, and you have no clue whatsoever what the answer is. What do you do?

A couple things: you accept your very likely defeat, and then you make the best of your inevitable downfall by expressing your artistic freedom in the form of a Final Jeopardy! answer. This is the situation that contestant Talia Lavin found herself in, and boy did she deliver.

The category was “Oscar-nominated songs” and the clue was, “This song from a 1999 animated film about censorship had a word censored from its Oscar performance.” The actual answer to that question is  “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, but Lavin didn’t know that, so she made Saturday Night Live fans all over the world very happy by bringing one of the show’s storied sketches full circle and answering, “What is the love ballad of turd ferguson p.s. hi mom?”

Trebek is contractually obligated (probably) to read all Final Jeopardy! answers out loud, so he did, and ultimately, Alex Trebek spoke the words “Turd Ferguson” during an actual episode of Jeopardy!. For those who (for some bizarre reason) don’t know, Norm MacDonald, as Burt Reynolds, famously changed his name to Turd Ferguson in a classic Celebrity Jeopardy! sketch, and the world has never been the same since. Let us stroll down memory lane:
