A Free Diver Explores the Deceptive Power of Deep Ocean Currents

The deep ocean is alien. Though we have actually mapped 100 percent of the ocean floor to a resolution of five kilometers, we have a better idea of what the surface of Mars and Venus look like. And like another planet, the “atmosphere” of the deep sea can be deceptively powerful.

With nothing more than a wet suit and some goggles, last year free diver Guillaume Néry let himself be swept along the ocean floor near Tiputa pass with the aid of incredibly strong — and curiously invisible — ocean currents. Underwater cameraman Julie Gautier (who also worked with Néry on a gorgeous video called “Free Fall“) filmed Néry’s bizarrely serene journey and set it to music. It’s like watching an omnipotent being evaluate a new world. Or something.

You can watch the full video of Néry’s dive below (make sure to go HD and full-screen):

This is fake. It’s freezing at the bottom of the ocean, he doesn’t have oxygen, and it would most likely be a lot darker down there. The pressure alone would probably kill him.

    • Drew says:

The ocean floor in Tiputa Pass may be deep but it isn’t as deep as I think that you think, my friend.

    • Gav says:

He isnt actually touching the floor, hes a world class free diver that can hold his breath for several minutes. And as for the pressure and dark comments, thats just silly.

  2. cas says:

If it were real, then the moments he touches ocean floor with his feet would have dust and particles coming up.

  3. Rob says:

We know more about the stars than the bottom of the ocean.  It’s a fantastic mystery.
