Are you like me, and probably spending your Valentine’s Day weekend alone, bitter, and in front of the television, just randomly marathoning whatever is on? Well, this year it doesn’t have to be so random, as the El Rey Network has announced they’re airing a Freddy Krueger/ A Nightmare on Elm Street marathon to celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend. Now you can channel your bitter single-person’s rage through Robert Englund’s timeless portrayal of the Springwood Slasher starting on Saturday, February 13, and continuing on through into Valentine’s Day.
Unlike most A Nightmare on Elm Street movie marathons on TV, the folks at El Rey are also including several episodes of the late ’80s anthology series Freddy’s Nightmares. The series was hosted by Robert Englund in full Freddy attire, and even occasionally included him in the stories. The show was super low budget, and frankly, not very good. Its one claim to fame is having given many big name actors their start—Brad Pitt and Mariska Hargitay included. The show is worth checking out just for that alone.
Following four episodes of the show, the network will air the first five Nightmare films, starting with Wes Craven’s genius original movie. Sadly, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare won’t be included among them. Not so sadly, neither will the abysmal Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. (You will also be spared the equally awful 2010 remake).
