A Farewell Message from Matt Smith

Matt Smith announced two weeks ago that he’d be leaving Doctor Who after the 2013 Christmas special and offered a short blurb for the press release, but nothing on video. Now, via BBC’s Doctor Who page, here he is with a very heartfelt and very Smith-y goodbye, in Detroit, in the style of “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” He’s a real class act, that Mr. Smith. I’m sure he’ll have nothing but success in his post-Who life.

In related news, the BBC has announced that the Twelfth Doctor will not be announced until the autumn, in “late August, even September.” They’re keeping the identity of the new lead actor (who probably still hasn’t been cast yet) a secret until just before filming starts. So, I guess we’ll just have to put the ridiculous speculation as to this person’s identity on pause until then. Please.

  1. John says:

Anyone notice the hidden numbers in the message? They seem to be deliberate, and not just in a cutesy handwritten way. Like its a hidden code or something. Maybe a clue to the next Doctor’s identity?

  2. Greg Method says:

“What’s he doing in Detroit?….Well, send him plane fare and a new pair of pants.”

  3. patod says:

He got slashed in the head by a sword, right?

  4. satori3000 says:

Warm and fuzzy… I’m going to have a glow all day.

  5. Vincent S says:

I think I kinda needed a send off from Matt Smith. Thank you for the send off Matt Smith.

  6. Elena says:

Hey! I live in Detroit! Laughed a lot at that last statement. Detroit isn’t all bad, you know… XD

  7. CapnBludd says:

A very nice thank you from Mr. Smith, also I now know that Detroit has a monorail, and exactly where he was as well. I saw the street sign and hit google maps and street view 8′) https://maps.google.com/maps?q=detroit+monorail&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl&authuser=0

  8. Joe says:

I hear a lot of people hating on Mr. Smith. He had big shoes to fill, replacing Tennant is no small feat. I personally loved him as The Doctor.

Now, can they just cast Rupert Grint already so The Doctor can get his ginger hair 🙂

  9. Frankie says:

i still think that its going to be a 2 parter The anniversary and then 3 weeks later with christmas and tennant and Hurt bridge the gap until he finishes regenerating and we don`t find WHO it is until 2014

  10. Riley says:

I find it highly unlikely that John Hurt will be the next doctor considering he has signed on to the pilot of Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain. He will be busy on a different show 🙂

  11. TheDemko says:

Anyone else notice that there seemed to be 12’s and 13’s scattered amongst the letters of his thank you notes? Or is that just me being too Moff-aware?

  12. It’s my Birthday today, June 21 (same as Prince William) – this was a fantastic gift from Matt. I cried. I will miss him as The Doctor.
    Thank you, Matt.

  13. rgthane says:

He’s filming “How to Catch a Monster” in Detroit.

  14. Sam says:

He is so great. Where’s his hair??! And putting the speculation on hold?? HA! Good luck with that.

  15. Beaucifer says:

    Thank you Doctor,

For regenerating in our hearts, running with our passions and saving us all again and again. You were every bit the ”Madman with a box” that we all needed. You have earned our love and respect and garnered a tremendous Whovian following. We are your fans and will follow your path eagerly awaiting what you bring to us next.
So I say again, thank you and good luck.

    Your Companions

  17. Brian E. says:

    Adorable!

  18. Kristoffer says:

didn’t sam winchester say yes to lucifer in detroit? coincidence matt smith is there???? wtf

  19. You Don't Know Me says:

He looks like he’s dressed up as the Ninth Doctor in the video. Kind of funny if you think about it.

  20. Rich R says:

No audio, fades in. Shows the first few pages. Then “Lose Yourself starts to play. It’s perfectly times for the beat to drop when he shows the paper that says “To the fans.” Instead of speaking after the last page, he just turns and confidently walks in the direction the camera is facing. Music continues to play as camera watches him walk away, until he is barely visible anymore, and fades to black, music still playing.

  21. Shayde says:

I bet he regenerates in the anniversary special and they’re screwing with us.

  22. jm5150 says:

is it at all possible that John Hurt was already annouced as the next doctor? maybe thats what the season finale was all about. typically we dont know until he regenerates, maybe it was a teaser. his regeneration went into the future too, to the same point in time in the “name of the doctor” episode. just a thought… could be way off.

  23. chris says:

as soon as this started I realized he was in Detroit… I knew exactly where he was.
