A Documentary About BATMAN Co-Creator Bill Finger Is in the Works

For decades, the man who co-created Batman has been largely unknown among the general public. But the tide is slowly shifting for the late Bill Finger. Last year, DC Comics finally began crediting Finger in every Batman comic as well as Gotham and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now Hulu is set to throw the spotlight on Finger’s life and his numerous contributions to the comic book industry.

Via The AV Club, Hulu’s Craig Erwich told reporters at the TCA press tour that the streaming service is launching Limelight, a new series of documentaries that will focus on people “who forever shaped pop culture.” One of the first Limelight documentaries will focus on Finger, but the report didn’t state who is directing and writing Finger’s spotlight documentary or when it will debut.

Outside of hardcore comic book fans and creators, Finger’s story has long gone untold. In 1939, Finger teamed up with artist Bob Kane for the very first Batman story in Detective Comics #27, before the two began a very long run together that led to the first Batman ongoing series. The initial inspiration for Batman came from Kane, but Finger contributed the majority of the elements of that came to define the Dark Knight including Bruce Wayne, Robin, Commissioner Gordon, Gotham City, the Batmobile, the Batcave, the Joker, Catwoman, and several of Batman’s earliest villains. Finger also co-created the original Green Lantern, and even wrote two episodes of the ’60s Batman TV series.

Because of the contract that Kane signed with the publisher, he was given sole credit for creating Batman. Kane only acknowledged Finger’s contributions to their iconic character years after Finger passed away in 1974. Finger’s peers in the comic book industry never forgot his story, and the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing was named in his honor 11 years ago.
