A Dire Wolf Stalks Its Prey In The Kills’ Music Video for “Siberian Nights”

It’s been a pretty rough Game of Thrones season for dire wolves. First we lost Shaggydog (or did we?) to the traitorous Umber family, and then we lost (spoiler) Summer to a mountain of literally heartless wights. It’s been hard to watch their numbers dwindle so steadily throughout the series, which is why the Kills new video for their song “Siberian Nights” should cheer you right up!

The rock duo’s austerely directed music video, the second from their newest LP Ash & Ice, features a wolf (I know dire wolves don’t exist anymore, but it’s fun to imagine, right?) that closely resembles Ghost, running unfettered through a desert landscape at night. As the predatory animal chases after a group of robe-clad wanderers and a horse, it makes you wish for more action scenes from the best pets in Westeros.

“Am I too close for comfort?” sings Alison Mosshart as images of the feral animal flash on the screen. Sans video, this line follows especially suggestive, lurid descriptions, but the animal-on-the-hunt adds an entirely new dimension of the visceral, sexual conceit. According to guitarist Jamie Hince, he wrote this track while he was on the trans-Siberian railway, as close to the middle of nowhere as you can possibly get. It’s easy to imagine pining for someone as the severe landscape becomes a monotonous wall; the ringing sound effect at the very beginning of the track channels Psycho and adds to the sense of overwhelming claustrophobia he must have felt on that journey. Perhaps at his loneliest, he looked out from the passenger car and before completely losing his mind saw a near mystical looking wolf. That fantastical sight would bring anyone back to earth.

Matt Grosinger is the music editor of Nerdist and will not stand to see any more dire wolves die.
