A Brief Note In Support Of Making Weird Al The Next Super Bowl Halftime Show Star

After watching Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show (okay, I peeked at it from the kitchen while washing out the chili pot), the proposal made by Julian Garcia of the New York Daily News in a column in Saturday’s paper seems to me even more appropriate:

We need a Weird Al Super Bowl halftime show. Seriously, this HAS to happen.

The Super Bowl halftime show needs a truly iconic personality to make it work, but it really works best when the icon’s still relevant. And who’s more relevant than Weird Al Yankovic? He continues to record successful music, he sells out his concerts, and it would be way more entertaining than most of the halftime shows we’ve seen in years. Plus, there’s a strong chance Cirque du Soleil wouldn’t show up, which would be a net plus.  And if Weird Al does it, that means another year we won’t get a return performance by the Black Eyed Peas, so, yeah.

Anyway, I have no idea how to make this a reality. Do we hashtag tweets with #weirdalforsuperbowlhalftime? Do we send politely-worded but passionate emails to the NFL? You guys could probably come up with a way.

Weird Al for Super Bowl Halftime. Like #sixseasonsandamovie, it’s an idea whose time has come.

  1. @Julian- Yes! As acknowledged/linked in the article, your column inspired this one. Brilliant. We MUST make this happen!

  2. Hey everyone! Did you guys see the article I wrote on Sunday about Weird Al playing next year’s Super Bowl?
    Here it is: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/time-a-true-american-icon-invited-super-bowl-halftime-stage-weird-al-yankovic-article-1.1017136
And please listen to this interview I did today on an LA radio station:

  3. dAVE inden says:

I started a Facebook page for this. It can be found at facebook.com/WeirdAlatSuperBowl

and there is an online petition here:
    http://www.change.org/petitions/the-national-football-league-nerds-everywhere-weird-al-yankovic-performs-the-super-bowl-xlvii-half-time-show#

    We can make this happen.

  4. Lee says:

Well anything would be better than madonna

  5. colette lauzon says:

I want to be actually IN the performance, too. Do I get 2 votes?

  6. hap happerson says:

You can sign this petition and get things started! Weird Al for 2013 halftime show!

    http://www.change.org/petitions/the-national-football-league-hire-weird-al-yankovic-to-perform-at-the-2013-super-bowl-halftime-show

  7. Gwif says:

Sure, Al would be great, but what the Super Bowl really needs is something to replace all the boring FOOTBALL.

  8. xvan damagex says:

I think this could work as a halftime show being shown on another network (Example: Puppybowl). Potential hosts could be Cartoon Network, MTV(?), Comedy Central. I would watch the crap out of this.

  9. Stormy says:

Al would crush this. Come on, how else are we ever gonna get someone to play polka accordion at the Super Bowl?

  10. Patrick says:

I would love to see what Al would come up with for a halftime show.

  11. Chris says:

They were actually talking about Weird Al during the pregame show, so the time to act is definitely now.

  12. Red says:

Madonna almost falls down….the chubby black chick flips us all the bird. What a GREAT halftime show…NOT. Weird Al would be a different kind of show for sure. I am all for it.

  13. Jake says:

To be realistic, the only way this happens is if FOX is showing the Super Bowl, because CBS is too traditional and NBC is too desperate for ratings to do anything risky. If FOX decided to do a comedy-centric show (perhaps putting Seth MacFarlane in charge) then the odds go up, and it would help even more if Weird Al had a show on FOX to promote (which is a great idea in of itself).

  14. Doh! says:

Hey, why diss Cirque du Soleil?

  15. Livius says:

That would make me so happy.
I’d go and be outside of the Superdome for that.

  16. Ha, love it and might be the only way I’d watch the Super Bowl. Oh well, the only way I’d watch the Super Bowl half time show… I don’t think there’s anything that would make me watch the whole thing.

  17. Patti says:

This sounds great. I might even watch the game if I knew Al would be the half-time entertainment. Ok, I’d guess when the half-time show would start, and tune in then. haha!

  18. DoctorParadox says:

Don’t suggest starting a twitter campaign if you don’t mean it! If you tweet it, they will come!! #weirdalforsuperbowlhalftime

  19. matts says:

    Yes! Make it so.

  20. Matt says:

just give me a place to vote and you’ll have it.

  21. Jen says:

    Yes! It NEEDS to happen!

  22. Julie says:

Someone should start a facebook page for this, like they did for Betty White hosting Saturday Night Live.

  23. Matthew M says:

Im all for it. On another note, how does he stay so youthful looking? I don’t think he has aged at all since “Eat It”

  24. daniel r says:

I was impressed by Richard Simmons’ tight rope performance. :p
