7 Things We Need From the New DUNE

Legendary Pictures just announced that they’re planning an adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s seminal sci-fi classic Dune. Whether it winds up on the big screen or small screen remains to be seen, as this new version of the infamously hard to adapt books is still in the very early planning stages. But that doesn’t mean the internet isn’t already full of people chiming in about what they’d like to see and that includes us. We have a few suggestions for the glorious God Kings at Legendary that we hope they’ll consider as this franchise marches forward.

  1. Make it a TV series. Dune is a sprawling story set in a giant universe and filled with engrossing characters. Fitting all that into one (or even a few) two hour movies would force you to jettison so much of what we love about the books. Give it the Westworld or Game of Thrones treatment; a big budget, premium cable series that will allow you to explore everything on the page.
  2. Don’t shy away from the environmental undertones. Dune author Frank Herbert was a devoted ecologist, concerned about humans harmful impact upon the planet. A lot of those concerns are reflected in the text and they’re concerns that we should be paying attention to now more than ever.
  3. Get the stillsuits right! The stillsuits are one of Dune‘s cooler creations, a suit that recycles all the moisture from your body into drinkable water. We’d love to see it realized realistically.
  4. Do the sword fights right! Due to the weird intricacies of personal force fields in Dune, characters fight with swords instead of guns. This could be a chance for some awesome, on screen sword fights. Is the fight choreographer for Into the Badlands available?
  5. High tech/low tech. Dune takes place in a future where technology has evolved but computers and AI are outlawed. That leads to some amazing ideas realized in some very interesting ways. If the new adaptation strikes the right cord between high tech and low tech, it could be like nothing we’ve ever seen on screen before.
  6. Get a true visionary to direct. Dune is filled with amazing imagery and it deserves as a director who can bring it all to life. Denis Villeneuve has expressed interest and after his work on Arrival we’re hard pressed to think of anyone better to take the wheel. Well except for maybe…
  7. Alejandro Jodorowsky. The extremely-crazy-but-also-extremely-brilliant cult director came extremely close to bringing us a Dune movie in the 70s and it was supposed to be amazing. And get this, he’s still alive! Give Alejandro Jodorowsky whatever he needs to finally make his masterpiece!

Let us know what you want from the new Dune in the comments!
