There’s no shortage of parodies for the 50 Shades of Grey trailer. The way the trailer is cut seemingly makes it perfect for slicing, dicing, and spinning. And I think I’ve come across the best edit ever. Yes, I said ever. YouTuber Adam Harum took Christian Grey out of the trailer and replaced him with Ian McKellen’s Gandalf the Grey from the Lord of the Rings. He’s more than just a wizard. He’s a powerful business-wizard with special interests that are centered on Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Watch:
This gives a whole new meaning to “Keep it secret. Keep it safe.”
Until I watched this parody, I had no idea that Gandalf’s lines could be made to sound so dirty. In the Lord of the Rings films and books, he’s a paragon of wisdom. Here… well, he’s a paragon of something else entirely, but it totally works. This parody is a shining example of the importance of context because wow, can it change everything. Next time I watch any of the films in the Middle-earth saga, I’m going to be thinking of this video and giggling every time Gandalf speaks because I’ll be imagining him wooing Anastasia and wondering what’s in his Red Room. It’s mostly funny except for the scene at the end of the parody when he wakes up as Gandalf the White. That image is now burned into my brain in an uncomfortable way.
Which quote of Gandalf’s do you think works best in the parody? Share with the class in the comments.
