You know those 48-hour challenges where you have to make a movie in just two days with certain restrictions dropped on you at the last minute? Boing Boing points us to this one by writer Mike Sizemore and director Andrew James Sykes, who were given a title — “Precision” — a prop (a clear, label-free bottle of red or green liquid), and a single line of dialogue: “It is just a glitch in the time continuum, it will sort itself out in a minute. Just hope it won’t wipe you out in the mean time.” The team took that line down the time travel path, went out with a Canon 550D, and shot this:
Shot, scored, edited in Final Cut, done in 48 hours. The editing may be a little choppy, the dialogue occasionally muddy, but for a two-day affair, it’s a pretty strong calling-card. Read Sykes’ discussion of how they did it here. And whether you like the results or not, it serves as a reminder of something you know already: With the present state of technology and distribution, and a little — okay, a lot — of creativity, you can make art. No excuses.

Hate to be *that guy,* but there is no Canon 55D. Do you mean the Canon 5D mkII? (5D mkI doesn’t do video)
This is so cool! My college theater just did something akin to 48-hour projects such as this one. An actor picks out their own costume and a prop, the artistic director takes a picture of them, a director is chosen from a pool and gets two pictures at random from the group, gives the pictures to a randomly assigned playwright (which is where I enter in). The playwright has 48 hours to draft a script using only what appears in the photos, then the director has 48 hours to direct the play and rehearse it, then the company comes together and showcases the 12 or so pieces generated that week. That whole process is called a “lab” and we did it 4 times over, each with new groupings of actors, directors, writers, etc. At the end of the 4 weeks we voted on which pieces had the most merit and the top 11 were selected, perfected, and presented as a mainstage production. So cool!
Bravo to these guys, and to spontaneous art everywhere.
Now I want two things, a Canon 55D, and for this to be made into a more fleshed out full feature (kept indie though – last thing we need is angelina jolie in the title role with horrible over the top CGI).
