360-Degree Video of SpaceX’s Successful Drone Barge Landing is Stunning

Just a few weeks ago, Elon Musk’s aerospace and spaceflight company SpaceX made history. As a spectacular proof-of-concept, the mission sending cargo to the International Space Station successfully landed the first stage of an enormous Falcon 9 rocket at sea aboard an autonomous barge. Now, you can relive all the excitement and awe again, as the company has released a new, 360-degree video today that puts you right on the barge, and in control of the camera.

SpaceX has released the view from the barge in a video before, but the interactivity of the 360-degree video above takes everything to a whole new level. The control really makes you feel like you are standing right there — I haven’t seen another rocket video quite like it. This is what 360-degree video tech was made for.

And let’s not forget about the forethought here. Someone at SpaceX (we like to think everyone there is just Elon Musk in different robot suits) had the brilliant idea to put a 360-degree capable camera on board the barge in the first place. And watching the video, a few things are much clearer. When you have the opportunity to control the camera, the scale of everything is even more impressive. That stage of the Falcon 9 rocket is huge, and the landing, though successful, wasn’t exactly gentle. It was a roaring, rumbling fire of engineering, expertise, and a little bit of luck.

What do you think? Is there a better way to use 360-degree video technology in the name of rocket science? Let us know in the comments below.
