20th Anniversary CHRONO TRIGGER/CHRONO CROSS Album Coming in October

CrunchyRoll recently ran a story stating that Square Enix has teamed back up with composer Yasunori Mitsuda to release a soundtrack album to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Chrono Trigger releasing on the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo system.

The album is reportedly titled Harukanarutokinokanatahe, which CrunchyRoll says very loosely translates to “Far Beyond The Distant Time”. (I assume that is supposed to translate as “To Far Away Times,” the name of a popular song from the game.) The album will include new arrangements of songs featured in Chrono Trigger, as well at its 1999 sequel Chrono Cross. No actual tracklist has been made available yet, but fans can probably expect things like the main title theme, “Battle Magus,” and “Corridors of Time” are going to make the cut.

Chrono Trigger told the story of a young boy named Chrono and followed him on an epic adventure that would span across time as he and friends fight to restore balance to all existence. Considered one of the greatest JRPGs of its time, as well as one of the most beloved games for Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger was born of the acclaimed team of Square (SquareSoft in North America), who mad the Final Fantasy series, and manga/anime artist Akira Toriyama who is best known for Dragon Ball and later the Dragon Quest games. Like many JRPGs, the story was far-reaching, complicated, and involved a lot of characters that would come and go as the story saw fit, but the time travel aspect was a fresh spin and the emotional journey of the characters truly connected with players. Sadly, the sequel, Chrono Cross, did not meet the same accolades, and gamers have waited for two decades to see if there will ever be another adventure in the series. I guess only time will tell.

Harukanarutokinokanatahe will release October 14th, for $25. It is not confirmed if the album with have an official release in North America, but in the age of the internet that shouldn’t really stop anyone from getting it (wink, wink).
