In the 1980s, government deregulation of children’s programming resulted in an avalanche of kid’s cartoons that were pretty much just 30 minute advertisements for toys. G.I. Joe, He-Man, Transformers, Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Pony, and dozens of others (anyone remember Sectaurs? Am I the only one?) were marketed to young kids throughout the decade. And then, of course, there was Rainbow Brite.

The premise of Rainbow Brite had a little girl called Wisp brought to a colorless realm, and to bring color back to the land she must find something called the Sphere of Light. She befriends a sprite named Twink, a white horse named Starlite and seven “Color Kids” (they all got toys, of course). She rescues the 7 Color Kids, and after using a magic  belt to defeat the bad guy, Wisp is renamed Rainbow Brite. She, the Color Kids and the Sprites then all live in Rainbow Land and are in charge of all the colors in the universe. Look, it was the ’80s. No one said the premises were complicated.

Now you can add Rainbow Brite to the endless plethora of 80s properties making a comeback (yesterday it was Care Bears). According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, subscription video-on-demand service Feeln is bringing back the show, with actress/singer Emily Osment and 1980s teen movie icon Molly Ringwald as its voice stars. Rainbow Brite has actually been revamped several times since it first came out, most recently in 2009-2010, in a somewhat controversial makeover that looked a bit too much like the Bratz dolls (in other words, overly sexualized). Judging from the trailer, it looks like Rainbow Brite is back to being a little girl again. The series kicks off November 6th with three weekly episodes, available on Feeln.
