12 MONKEYS Cast Teases Season 2 Surprises

Back in January, SyFy rolled the dice on a television adaptation of the 1995 Terry Gilliam film 12 Monkeys. From the get-go, co-creator Terry Matalas and his team planned to make a show that carried its own weight instead of relying on the film it was based on. After a very positive response to the first season, SyFy greenlit a second season for the time-travel drama only a few months after its premiere. Matalas and several cast members appeared at New York Comic Con this year to talk about the upcoming season and what fans might have to look forward to. They had to be careful, though, to make sure they didn’t give any of the great mysteries of the show away.

The show’s main star, Aaron Stanford, had a lot resting on his shoulders since the first season focused on his journey as the time-traveling Cole. Thankfully the first season did enough character building that Stanford will get to share some of that burden with the rest of the cast. “The first season was really the story of Cole vs. time,” said Todd Stashwick, who plays Deacon on the show. “The second season will play a bit more like an ensemble piece that will follow other characters, like Deacon, Cassandra, and Jennifer as well.”

This does not, however, mean that Stanford is completely off the hook. He will still have a major part to play, and SyFy has him running around a lot to get it all done. “We went to Budapest and shot for about 10 days,” Stanford said. “To do that in the middle of filming a season means having a lot of things balanced and planned. In order to make up for that, a lot of the season is being filmed about three episodes at a time. So every day we are filming scenes from various episodes. With a show like this it means not being entirely sure how one character is supposed to feel toward another in any given scene. It makes for a very complicated process, but with such an ambitious show they have to do things like that.”

12 Monkeys is the kind of show that has enough twists and turns through a season that could easily become confusing, but luckily that is not the case for Matalas when he’s planning the season out. “Like the first season,” he said, “the entire second season is building to this one final scene that has already been planned. With a show based in time travel, though, we can have a specific moment in mind and still have the freedom to go all over and experiment with how we get there.”

“I have read all the way through the season,” confessed Amanda Schull, who plays Cassandra on the show. “Of course I can’t say anything, or else it would spoil it. Even my husband didn’t want me to tell him because I’d ruin the show for him. What I can say is the end of the season is epic, and people are going to love it.”

The second season of 12 Monkeys will premiere on SyFy in April 2016. Let us know what you think of the show in the comments below, or drop us a prediction for season 2.
