Young STAR WARS Fan Surprised with 3D-Printed Arm from Darth Vader

The last time Darth Vader and some stormtroopers showed up at a school, a bunch of Jedi Younglings were slaughtered in cold blood. Fortunately, their most recent trip to visit some students was for a much much better reason.

Members of the fan group the 501st Legion helped surprise a young Star Wars fan in front of his entire school when they delivered his new 3D-printed prosthetic arm. Alvin Garcia Flores lived his entire life without the lower half of his right arm, and his principal, Terry Burton, helped arrange the making of his arm and the very special delivery.

A year ago Burton asked the Florida nonprofit Limbitless Solutions, a group that makes free 3D-printed prosthetic arms for children, to make one for Alvin. Then he asked the 501st if they would help give it to him. (Where do we send in nominations for “Principal of the Year?”)

Alvin also got to show Darth Vader and the rest of his squad around the school, while Alvin’s fellow students stood and cheered. His mother was also there. “He knows that I love him the way he is,” she said.

He hopes to be able to learn how to write with his new arm, but he will have to make sure he remembers to charge it, since the battery died on him the first day.

Alvin may have been given his new arm by someone that uses the Dark Side, but this story certainly brightened our day.
