You’ll Love Who Voiced BB-8 in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

BB-8 is the cutest droid in the entire Star Wars universe, but until the film’s world premiere, we didn’t realize just how familiar we already were with the folks who helped give the wee astromech its voice. We suppose there are (very minor) spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution if you don’t want to know how BB-8 got its voice.

In the credits of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you might see a couple of names with which you are well familiar, but had no idea were attached to Star Wars in any way: Bill Hader (from Saturday Night Live, Trainwreck, and Inside Out) and Ben Schwartz (of Parks and Recreation fame) are co-credited as “BB-8 vocal consultants,” and that’s because their voices are the foundation of BB-8’s vocalizations, which are mainly electronic beeping noises.

If you’ve ever seen musician Peter Frampton use his signature “talk box”—check this video out if you’re not sure what we’re talking about—that’s essentially how BB-8’s voice was created, according to Hader, who said in an interview that, “J.J. [Abrams was] f—ing around with this sound effects app on his iPad that was attached to a talk box operated by me. It looked ridiculous, but it made BB-8’s voice.”

Hader has done plenty of voice acting in recent years, most notably on Inside Out, as had Schwartz, who provides voices on BoJack Horseman and Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja. That, combined with the fact that Hader and Schwartz are two of the most lovable actors and comedians in the business, makes us very happy that the two are (hopefully) getting some cut of the mountains of Star Wars money.

Do you think this bit of movie trivia is BB-gr8? Let us know in the comments below (also sorry about that pun)!
