Was not Orny’s biggest fan after watching Comedian. However, after listening to him here, I really feel that he was just slightly misrepresented in the doc. Solid guy, good episode.
I swear this guy’s voice is a ringer for Jimmy Pardo. (And I llllike it.)
This episode is so weird. Pete’s done more research, studied structure, analyzed more about comedy in general. Not as much as he should, but more than Orny.
This is not about “telling it like it is”, it’s about understanding your craft.
Orny acted this old, jaded and out of the loop in Comedian. That was the fun part of the documentary. You KNEW he’d never make it. Of course Pete would follow this guy’s career. Not because Pete likes his comedy, he doesn’t, but because this guy represents the first “famous” person Pete saw that was beatable, not in a “he’s a hack” sort of way, but in a “he’s doing it all wrong” sort of way.
Orny isn’t actually funny. Fans might say he is, but comedians know. You can tell when someone only studied half the craft.
You almost can’t have a conversation with them. And that’s exactly what this podcast is, Pete trying to have a pleasant conversation with someone who doesn’t get it, but you’re afraid to explain to him that he just doesn’t get it.

I hate when the guest goes into this crazy hostile “why are you asking me questions” fake angry “comedian being angsty” act. So annoying, the guy like tries to argue with pete, just chill.

That was a really good episode, finally decided to catch up because I felt like a douche commenting on super old episodes.
yowza! i was in a fairly foul mood, and orny’s ranting “If you don’t get it, I’m not going to explain it” really sublimated that shitty feeling I was in into some happy laughs.
In other words: I like! Funny! Yay!
