I just want to confirm the dance suggestion @ 18:50. DANCE! Women love it!
This was awesome. Thoughtful and hilarious and the graveyard story was actually pretty unsettling.
strange dynamic here. chris still has that teacher way of talking down to pete and yet pete has blown way past him in the business. Pete trying to encourage him about being a punk legend was nice in a sad way. Kinda embarrassing for a grown man to be that nerdy proud about eating butt.
“I LIVE IN GREEN POINT!”
Chris Gethard is a good comedian/person. Go fuck yourself.
i only comment on the best ones, so like, this one of the best ones.
I’m a black person, and a fan of the show, and I own multiple Lands’ End cotton polos. Boom. You’re welcome. 🙂
Anyone know off the top of their head which live YMIW Hardwick’s on?
JESUS CRISPY! lmao @myself ive listened to dozens of these and THAT’S literally the 1st comment I ever post… oi
Sry everyone but this just struck me as i was listening. Just wanna say, when they were talking about how some scientists can study how epilepsy affects the two brain hemispheres differently because in some people the two are more “separated” than in others… Im preeeetty sure its ‘Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.’ I did a project on it in college and the OG “Rain Man” Kim Peek was a sufferer but somehow granted him INCREDIBLE cognitive abilities while at the same time making simple tasks very difficult. Look it up its really mind-blowing stuff!
haven’t listened to the episode yet, but might want to read “the ethical slut” as well. it is written kind of hokily, but is a good resource when it comes to polyamory.
@johng
You’re right…don’t know much about uncircumcised penises. Had no clue!
Also,
If anyone is interested, the Radiolab episode that Chris refers to is this one:
http://www.radiolab.org/2010/apr/05/
it’s one of the best episodes. The segment that blew Chris’s mind and mine is the last one. The show’s theme is “limits”. The last one is about human limits. Are we on the cusp of making machines that understand things that our meat brains just are not capable of understanding? The AI in this segment has figured some rules of nature out that can be proven to work, but are too complex to explain to a human.
It’s come up a few times…the penis is designed to scoop the mess out. Would that apply to non-circumcised penises? I would think not so does that still apply? Random thought – it all makes sense to me either way! Love the show and enjoyed this episode a lot!
Thanks, Pete!
@Supergordi
Yes, it applies to uncircumcised penises. Maybe you’re not really familiar with penises or circumcision. When a penis is erect, you can’t tell if it’s circumcised or not. Circumcision is merely the removal of the foreskin, which covers the head of the penis when not erect. It’s just a skin flap.
The general shape of the penis with it’s distinct mushroom head is the same in either case. It’s that mushroom shaped head that is designed to do the scooping out of semen. With each thrust, it goes in, and on the outward thrust it scrapes out competing sperm. It isn’t very effective, unless the penis is going in immediately after another penis, so it’s kind of like the sexual selection of gang rape.
What a great episode.
@John G, thank you, sir! And I am currently reading Sex and Dawn (finally, after having owned it for about six months). I appreciate weirdos being open to my being open to this weird (and by that i mean new and different) thing. It’s blowing my mind the discussions I’ve had and the books I’ve read (or am reading) and I’m eager to share that experience with y’all. And yes, @bastien, I too wanted to look more closely at this topic (polyamory) when I saw that for the people I know, it’s not about being down to fuck anyone but about how we view relationships, love and intimacy as a whole. Interesting stuff!
Loved it. So many good things about Chris. Actually, Pete and Chris are kindof a perfect team. Would love to see them together in future creative ventures. Chris a regular on Pete’s show?
Pete,
I just want to say that you’ve brought up a bunch of stuff lately, where you say you’re not doing it justice, and I think you’re doing fine. Your atheist explanations have gotten way better. You’re discussions of polyamory and “Sex at Dawn” are not far off at all. You’re doing great. As an atheist, a scientist and a polyamorous person, I give you my thumbs up.
You should read “Sex at Dawn” though. It seems like you’re right on the cusp of accepting polyamory yourself, and that book will push you over the edge. Yes, jealousy is a problem in such relationships, but all the successful ones are built on honesty and good communication. Remember that most relationships are polyamorous anyway, it’s just that one partner or both doesn’t know about the other partners other lovers. It’s so much better to just keep doing that, but talk about it first.
Here’s the Cornell press release: http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/2009/04/computer-derives-natural-laws-observation
Did anyone catch the name of the Machine that was writing the Calculus problems? I’d love to read about it!
Also, great episode! So personal and relatable. Great job guys!
Ha! Went immediately from Brent Weinbach’s episode to this. Who knew butt eating would come up two random episodes in a row.
beeteedubs, I had to look up & listen to the live YMIW with C.Paul Gethard since this show was so sweet & highly recommend checking that one out too–it’s YMIW#33 and way fun!
A. Maz. ING. Loved this one. This one has to be my favorite. Great guest. Most interesting stories in a long time. Most open to the concept of the podcast. Just great. Thanks Pete and Chris!
Hey, the studies with epileptics could be performed because they had their Corpus Callosum (the ‘bridge’ between sides of the brain) surgically severed to keep the epileptic ‘storms’ from spreading through the brain. So their ability to participate in the study was because of the surgery not the epilepsy. (Boy, when I learn something 10 years ago in introductory psych, I *really* like to show it off.)
This episode was fucking great. So warm and awkward and lovely.
One of the best episodes ever–thanks for introducing us to yet another amazing weird kid, Pete 🙂
@Pete
Just had a thought. I think you’ve already had him on and talked a bit about it, but you should have Myq Kaplan on and have an updated discussion about polyamory with him.
It’s been over 100 episodes since his and if you hadn’t been with a polyamarous person when that episode came out, it would be interesting to hear you guys talk about it with that (possibly) new experience of yours in mind.
@Pete
Thanks, Pete. I hope you do talk about it more, as it’s something that doesn’t get talked about much at all in society.
People are so quick to equate polyamory with two things: sleeping around/being a slut, or polygamy. That’s simply not what polyamory is about.
And while it may involve sex with multiple partners, it’s obviously not just about sex, it’s about relationships and love. Not that sex with multiple partners is bad in itself.
I’m not strictly poly myself (haven’t had the opportunity to find out), but I have been an “other person”, and I’ve known and been around some of the other “other people”. It can be awkward, as any social situation can be. But there is that next level of awkwardness.
Especially if you’ve never been with a poly person before, as you can fall into old mindsets, like having feelings of cheating–either them with the other person, or even feeling that you’re the person they’re cheating with.
It’s strange in that way: it’s an open relationship where you might feel like you shouldn’t talk about it around other people, and especially with your partners’ other partners. It can definitely feel a little like messing around behind someone’s back, even though that flies in the face of the entire idea. You have to kind of rewire your brain a little to a more updated way of thinking about it, so you don’t fall into those old trappings.
p.s. I just got a “laser”, how neat is that?
Pete – What’s worse; Meeting your gf’s friends and parents or meeting your polyamorous girlfriends dudes she’s fuckin’?
@Bastien, laser! So interesting. Thank you for sharing! Much to think about, I’m sure it’ll keep coming up, as with most things in my life! 🙂
One of my favorite episodes so far! Certainly one of the funniest! I loved it!! It was so weird and true and pure!
Great episode. I’ve been waiting for this one since his appearance on the SXSW live episode. The way he managed to roll with the punches of being introduced after Apatow and belittled by Kumail had me dying with laughter.
I think I actually read that book on memory, but I never think to apply it in everyday situations. I’ll definitely try out that strategy for remembering people’s names though.
@Pete
Continuing on from your discussion about being involved with a polyamarous person…
You talked about the jealousy in thinking about which people your polyamarous partner might be with, but there’s another more internal element that I wonder if you’ve experienced.
I’ve sort of felt this myself and it’s that when it’s already a given that your partner is polyamarous and does have relationships with other people, instead of thinking “Could they be with THIS person?” or even “Why are they with THAT person?”, you might turn it back on yourself and start to think “If they see something in this other person, then what is it that they see in me?”
Maybe you don’t understand what they see in the other person, or maybe the other person is just completely different than you, but there’s a certain more self conscious level of jealousy that can pop up. You start to question what they see in you.
Or if you dislike the other person they have a relationship or don’t understand what they like about them, then you might start to question what’s so special about yourself– If you thought the other person was ugly for example, it makes you think less of yourself. As if your partner being with someone you don’t like starts to bring down your own perception of your property value, so to speak. Like you had a sense that you were this hot ticket, but then you see some other schlub that your partner is with and think you must not have been as hot a ticket as you thought.
Of course, if jealousy starts to manifest itself for someone in more than just passing thoughts, then they shouldn’t be with a polyamarous partner, because it becomes unfair to everyone involved.
Go to peteholmes.com for more intro?! But I have all the intro I can handle!
Also, yes, apparently the internet will call you out on everything. But we love you. Well, I do, at least. Anyway, have a nice day!
PLEASE tell me they eventually get to the story!
My lawn has never looked better!
Edging is so weird.
The now once weekly podcast sched makes each YMIW release so much sweeter than before. Guess the buildup makes it all the more exciting when they finally arrive. Kinda like edging, but for podcasts!
FIRSTIES! Riff ing bit. Riff riff inb bit, C’mon!
