loved this episode and I happened to be super-lucky because it’s the 1st YMIW episode I listened to.
Does anyone know what the book title is – referenced when discussing How To Explain Death to Children.

  2. Eric says:

I thought I was the only one who was stupid enough to be an asthmatic smoker. Glad that we both had the sense to quit.

    This was a great episode.

  3. Rick says:

Two people making sense hilariously. It’s not a free podcast because I just spent my time listening. It was the deal of the century. Thank you Mr. Holmes and Mr. Hodgman.

  4. John G. says:

    Pete,

Seriously, man, great episode, one of the best. I hope you schedule another one with john hodgman immediately.

This show just keeps getting better.

  5. P Jones says:

Best episode to date. Great show.

  6. Joe says:

You two were made for each other. Great conversation. Made me want to quit my job. But I probably won’t. πŸ™‚

  7. Brian W says:

If anyone is interested the Lynda Barry book is actually called ‘One Hundred Demons’ not 500 demons. he’s a lick to it on amazon – http://www.amazon.com/One-Hundred-Demons-Lynda-Barry/dp/1570614598 – Just FYI. πŸ˜‰

  8. mary says:

John Hodgman is an absolute joy. D’you know what I mean?

  9. Brian O says:

In an essay (unfortunately I cannot remember which one) Borges said something about the infinite monkey theorem (“It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times!”) that I think is the funniest thing I’ve ever read – so funny I got a tattoo of it.

Borges said: “Strictly speaking, one immortal monkey would suffice.”

  10. Colin says:

Loved the Outer Banks shoutout by Mr. Hodgman, the man is truly an encyclopedia

Where did you find this guy? Awesome show, fun, totally interesting and high energy. Rock and roll, hootchie koo πŸ™‚

  13. Tyler says:

Haven’t finished the episode yet, but regarding slashes, I think Wikipedia pretty much nails it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash_(punctuation)

Think of times when you would use a slash for something like either/or he/she, etc. That’s a traditional slash. At some point later we made this character ( \ ) and called it a back slash, making the regular one a forward slash.

When in doubt I always think about it by imagining I’m playing a side-scrolling motorcycle game (Excitebike, or if you want something more modern, Joe Danger or Trials). If you were racing to the right and you ran into a forward slash, it’d be a sweet jump! And a backslash would just hurt… unless you were going backward.

  14. J. says:

This episode was sooooo gooood! I loved it! I would absolutely love to see him return, because I liked the interaction a lot!

  15. David says:

Loved this guy. A real dry wit. Sadly I totally agree with him about looking for a plot but failing to find one. A big part of being a human being seems to be trying to assign meaning and weight to meaningless things – this must mean this and that must mean that – and then somtimes it becomes a “thing” and more people latch onto it. Why do we do this?
Great guest – thanks for the show.
p.s. he totally googled the episode of True Blood for the boobies – it was screaming through every word he was saying.

  16. Anna says:

Fantastic episode. Loved all the discussion of The Crying of Lot 49 – Pete, it’s a deliciously weird book, you need to read it.

  17. Ted says:

Where is the Blaster Girl episode??? The people have spoken.

  18. smashfalcon says:

Great episode. Pete you would really love The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. There’s an excellent book-on-tape…or you could listen to the BBC radio show, which actually came before the book.

Something you guys touched on reminded me of this quote from a speech Douglas Adams once gave:

Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking “This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in…fits me rather neatly, doesn’t it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!”

This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it’s still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything’s going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.

  19. After considerable difficulty, I figured out the problem and fixed it. You may now enjoy Pete and John right here. Until something else breaks, that is.

  20. Kitt says:

Thank you MIchaelH for the good link!

  21. Abby says:

Burritos in the movie theater are amazing. You don’t need light to eat them, perfect movie food! I know it smells but can’t you be happy for the person enjoying it?

  22. Eric says:

Nope, I listened to it on my BeyondPod app. Look into it if you an android device.

Dammit Eric, are you trolling us right now? How did you get the streaming to work?

  25. Eric says:

Great ep! I know Katie sure agreed, this was probably the most I’ve ever heard her laugh on a YMIW podcast. Will she ever get her own ep? I’ll donate to help purchase her a skateboard if she comes on!
