X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST-THE ROGUE CUT Arrives on July 14th on Blu-ray & Digital HD

Despite being one of the early cast members announced for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Anna Paquin’s role as Rogue was ultimately cut out of the movie, reduced to a wordless cameo at the very end. Then last year Twentieth Century Fox announced that X-Men: Days of Future Past would be getting a “Rogue Cut” sometime in 2015, with Rogue’s sequences added back into the movie. Finally officially announced today by director Bryan Singer, via the Periscope app, we now have a release date for The Rogue Cut, and it’s an important one for fans of the franchise: July 14th, the same day the original X-Men movie hit theaters in 2000, arguably beginning the modern comic book movie age that we all live in now.

So what will this Rogue Cut of the movie consist of exactly? We know a full 17 minutes are being added to the film, which included the future X-Men staging a rescue of Rogue from the clutches of the Sentinels. Also, (and there are some pretty big SPOILERS for this version of the movie here, so fair warning) the scene where Wolverine loses his mental presence in that past and starts flailing about, ultimately slicing Kitty Pryde’s arm, which then has Rogue come in, absorb Kitty’s abilities, and take her place while they tend to her injuries. In the theatrical cut, Kitty just powers through the whole “Logan just cut up my arm” moment.

No other features for the Blu-ray have been announced yet, although Singer has promised all new special features for this release, probably including a sneak peek at X-Men: Apocalypse, which comes out next year. If I might be so bold as to suggest a special feature, how about some “Secret Files” on the characters from the movie, explaining how they got to be where they are since the original X-Men trilogy (and explaining some of the continuity holes left by the movie). Like why is Charles Xavier in a wheelchair if he mentally downloaded into a new body at the end of The Last Stand? When did Kitty develop a secondary mutation to send people’s consciousness back in time? And after losing his adamantium claws at the end of The Wolverine, when did Logan get them back?? The more continuity obsessed, anal-retentive fans (of which I am one) would probably eat up a feature like this.

X-Men: Days of Future Past: The Rogue Cut arrives on July 14th, on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
