What could be better than having one Josh Brolin in your big-budget superhero movie? Two Josh Brolins. And that’s exactly what Deadpool 3 and/or X-Force might be doing, according to Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld. While appearing on-stage at the Nerdist House at San Diego Comic-Con, Liefeld told host Patrick A. Reed that fans could very likely expect to see another iconic character from Deadpool’s rogues gallery go toe to toe with Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth, Cable, and the remnants of X-Force in Deadpool’s next cinematic outing.
Cable is one of Marvel’s most convoluted characters when it comes to backstory thanks in no small part to all of his body-sliding through space and time. With the arrival of Josh Brolin as Cable in Deadpool 2, many fans began feverishly speculating what other characters connected to the time-traveling mutant would work their way on to the big screen. Thankfully, Patrick A. Reed did what few among us have been able to do: asked Liefeld directly.
“Is Stryfe gonna show up?” Reed asked.
“Well, do you really hire Josh Brolin if you don’t want him to play both roles?” Liefeld replied. “We are perfectly assembled for an X-Force movie. And how do you not scratch that Stryfe itch, right?”
That’s right, True Believers: X-Force could very well feature the cinematic debut of Stryfe, which means that Josh Brolin would be pulling double-duty as both antihero and villain. For those of you who don’t know, Stryfe first appeared in New Mutants #100 as the villainous leader of the mutant terrorist group The Mutant Liberation Front. Kidnapped and raised by Apocalypse, Stryfe is Cable’s genetic clone and followed his “brother” back to the twentieth century where he became a constant thorn in the side of Cable and X-Force. From attempting to assassinate Professor X to bringing the deadly Legacy Virus back to present-day Earth, Stryfe is one of the most dangerous foes Cable has ever faced, and he would make an ideal villain for the newly formed big-screen version of X-Force to face.
But like with anything in on the Deadpool side of Fox’s Marvel movies, we’ll have to take this news with a Colossus-sized grain of salt. While the Deadpool films love to introduce classic comic book characters into the mix, many times it’s the set-up for an elaborate and outrageously violent joke. So as to whether or not we’ll get a full movie of Josh Brolin going full-on The Parent Trap remains to be seen, but in the meantime we have a fun little peek into the future of what could be.
What do you think? Should we take Rob Liefeld at his word? Will Stryfe be the big bad in Deadpool 3 and/or X-Force? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
