Last year, Fox brought back The X-Files for a six-episode run that left fans on a big cliffhanger with no resolution in sight. And while we’re still waiting for word about a fresh order of new episodes, series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are already set to reprise their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in The X-Files: Cold Cases, a new audio drama from Audible.
The X-Files: Cold Cases is based on The X-Files: Season 10 comic book series by writer Joe Harris and artist Michael Walsh. That comic was produced before Fox commissioned the revival series, so it is out-of-continuity with the television show despite input from X-Files creator Chris Carter. For the new audio version, Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhikerâs Guide to the Galaxy) adapted Harris and Walsh’s initial storyline, which finds Mulder and Scully forced out of hiding when their former associates are targeted by an enigmatic group.
In a newly released video from Audible, Duchovny and Anderson teased their returns, but they aren’t the only cast members coming back. Mitch Pileggi will once again play Walter Skinner, alongside William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man, and Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood, and Dean Haglund reprising their roles as the Lone Gunmen.
If Audible continues to adapt the comic book storyline beyond the initial Cold Cases, then several other X-Files characters could potentially return as well. It’s an exciting possibility for fans of the series, and we’d love to see that happen!
Audible will release The X-Files: Cold Cases on July 18.
