We’ve seen Wonder Woman in action in the DC Extended Universe. She appeared in Batman v Superman, and Gal Gadot owned the screen with her grace, poise, and fierce ass-kicking abilities. But what caused her to leave Themyscira and fight in the world of man? That’s what Wonder Woman will explore. The newest trailer for the upcoming film shows more of why Diana decided to leave her idyllic home and join the fight–simply put, the fight came to her.
The images of soldiers coming to Themyscira and wreaking havoc with harsher weapons than the Amazonians possess are enough to make me want to get up and fight, too. Diana is moved not to only save her homeland, but to fight for the good of humanity. That’s one of the most shining aspects about the character in comics, and I’m pleased to see it coming through loud and clear in the trailers with lines from Diana like, “It is our sacred duty to defend the world.”
Besides seeing more of Diana diving into World War I, the trailer is packed with stunning visuals. The throne room in Themyscira, the battlefield, the dynamic motion of the camera that follows Wonder Woman’s fights–there’s a lot of frames to drool over. And though I’ve been concerned about the focus drifting from Diana to Steve Trevor, the trailers we’ve seen so far very much stick to her narrative. I’m optimistic.
Also: I really hope we see Etta Candy resort to fisticuffs when the film arrives on June 2, 2017. Please oh please.
