As most of you know, the epic drum battle between Will Ferrell and The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on The Tonight Show finally happened. Ferrell emerged victorious with his legendary cowbell and the score between Smith and Ferrell was settled. That might have been the end of the story, but it turns out that drum battle between the drummer for an actual rock band and Ferrell’s cowbell was only the first of what might be an all-out drum war.

In a recent interview with Spin, Ferrell revealed that both he and Chad Smith are now gunning for Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich to battle “drum sticks-a-drum sticks.” Ferrell claims that Ulrich gets mistaken for both Chad Smith and Will Ferrell (which you may recall was the spark for the first drum battle), and that will no longer stand. If you saw Smith’s chops during the first battle and how intense he got, one can only imagine how fierce Ulrich will be if he picks up this drumming gauntlet.

This time, it seems like Smith and Ferrell are in cahoots against Ulrich. So, perhaps Will Ferrell will indeed have something special in store for the drummer of Metallica, one of the most renowned heavy metal bands of all time.

For now, Ulrich has yet to respond to Will and Chad’s challenge, but let’s hope he’s just stalling while he chooses a charity.
