Will Aaron Paul Appear in Ron Howard’s THE DARK TOWER Adaptation?

Who doesn’t love Breaking Bad? If you’re not into that show, I don’t know if I trust you. Just sayin’…

Apparently mega director Ron Howard is a fan (although I still don’t know if I trust him after The Dilemma), and a fan of recent Golden Globe winning actor Aaron Paul. Paul says has had “a bunch of meetings” regarding Howard’s most ambitious project to date: bringing Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series to screens big and small.

There has been a lot of stop and start news revolving around the cinematic adaptation of The Dark Tower over the course of Howard’s quest to bring the books to life. We know that the plan to fully adapt the series is an epic one, including multiple films and a television series in between. We also know that a little less than a year ago Academy Award winner Javier Bardem was rumored to be taking the lead as Roland Deschain. Universal pulled the plug, and Ron Howard took a self imposed “vow of silence” regarding the project.

So, back to Aaron Paul: the enthusiastic actor had previously tweeted about his interest in the project, but come on, I could tweet about my interest in the project too – that doesn’t mean it’s in the works! Ain’t It Cool News interviewed Paul at Sundance this month, and here’s what he said regarding the character of Eddie Dean:

“I’ve had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard… They’re definitely planning on making it. I’m excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character.”

So what do you all think? Did the money to take this epic project on suddenly appear? Are things back on track with The Dark Tower? I’ll tell you this: if Ron Howard can make a fourth season of Arrested Development happen, I think he can do anything.

  1. daniel says:

Javier Bardem is Roland Deschain. Eddie Dean hasn’t been decided yet maybe Zegers

  2. Nathaniel H. says:

I second Josh Brolin as a potential Roland (I also don’t like Bardem for the part), and I am totally cool with Aaron Paul as Eddie. I’m not sure who to cast as Susannah, and of course they’ll need an unknown for Jake. When Father Callahan comes into the picture, I think it’d be a really cool tie-in if they picked an actor who has already played him in a version of Salem’s Lot. That, or if they eventually produced a Salem’s Lot with that actor.

Re: NoMayoNoFun: As cool as it would be for King to play himself, it’d be hard for now-King to play 70s-king. But his son Joe Hill is pretty close to a spitting image!

  3. CK says:

I still say that Karl Urban would make a great Roland. And the lady that plays Michonne on Walking Dead would be an EPIC Susannah

  4. Keats says:

A grizzled up Andy Lincoln would be epic as Roland.

  5. Scott says:

I can see Aaron Paul as Eddie. I just cant see Ron Howard, or ANYONE for that matter, being able to do justice to this book series in film. I just wish they’d let it exist on the page.

  6. NoMayoNoFun says:

I dunno, Roland is “long tall and ugly.” Anson Mount might be a little too pretty and not enough subtlety. Jim Caviezel can get pretty gritty and still embody the stillness and grace of a gunslinger. If Clint Eastwood doesn’t accept the part, that is.

Also, PLEASE tell me Stephen King is playing himself.

  7. wabert says:

    Clint Eastwood IS Roland.

  8. Ryan says:

Aaron as Eddie Dean is perfect casting, if not a bit type casting. As for Roland, I can easily Josh Brolin with his looks and gruff voice, he would be a perfect fit.

  9. Erika says:

I think Paul could definitely play Edie and I would agree Javier Bardem would be an awful choice.. What about Jim Caviezel?he has that thousand yard stare going for him and blue jean eyes.. It’s hard to say, I love Roland so dearly that I’m afraid to trust him to anyone out there.

  10. Eric Kramer says:

I still say Jackie Earle Haley as Roland would be the next best thing to a young Eastwood to play the part. He’d be perfect.

  11. -Di. says:

Aaron Paul as Eddie Dean is such an awesome casting choice. I hope it actually happens.

How about Scott Eastwood as Roland? Maybe he could play a young Roland?

  12. Cassidy says:

This would be so amazing. I just have to say that I think Viggo Mortensen would be an amazing Roland. Please universe, let them make this series!!

  13. Drarry says:

I can see Aaron Paul as Eddie. In fact he’d probably be great in that role. However, I am still irked that Javier Bardem was/is being considered for the role of Roland.

  14. Keyson says:

Paul is perfect for Dean! But, why Anson Mount isn’t cast as Roland is a mystery to me…. Let’s see if Howard does the smart thing and combines books 1&4 in the first film. Roland’s backstory is crucial to that man we’ll meet wandering thru the desert and an element I thought King brought in late with the novels. Bravo to King and Howard, we’ve waited for this!
