What’s Free This Month: FEZ, CRYSIS 3, DISHONORED, CRIMSON DRAGON

The summer is notorious for being the lamest time for game releases. We barely get anything, and the backlog of titles we do have, well, they continue to collect dust as we curse that there’s nothing new to play (got to love us, eh?). This month, however, we get ten free titles from Sony and Microsoft that may help you get through the last legs of summer.

Sony’s offering the rogue-like puzzle game Road Not Taken for the PlayStation 4. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s a game where you play as a ranger making your way through the aftermath of a brutal winter storm, rescuing children, and hoping to make friends with the villagers of your town. I like to think of it as an adorable version of Mountie Simulator.

PlayStation Plus members can also look forward to the perspective-changing puzzle game Fez for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. First-person shooter Crysis 3 also makes its way to the PS3. To round out Sony’s free titles, there’s the adventure exploration game Proteus for the PS3 and Vita, the new exclusive music-infused Vita title, Metrico, which actually launches this month, and the visually stimulating multiplayer hack and slash beat ’em up game Dragon’s Crown for the Vita and PS3.

Microsoft’s Xbox One free Games With Gold goodies include rail shooter Crimson Dragon, which is known as the spiritual successor to the Panzer Dragoon series, and the space flight combat game Strike Suit Zero.

The Xbox 360 platform is treated to stunt racing craziness in Motocross Madness, free now until the 15th and the stealth action-adventure game Dishonored, which is free on the 16th till the end of the month. If you haven’t had a chance to explore the story of a bodyguard framed for murder, nab it when it’s free! It features a stellar voice cast that includes Carrie Fisher, Michael Madsen, Lena Headey, and more– plus it has an intriguing story to boot.

I personally am not too impressed with this month’s line up from either Sony or Microsoft, mostly because July’s free games included the likes of multiplayer titles BattleBlock Theater and Towerfall. That’s not to say August’s free games aren’t worth picking up, they are free after all. Plus, these are all titles that many gamers (and by “many gamers,” I mean a few of my friends), like myself, have yet to play, which makes this summer game drought not as hard to bear.
