Pixar’s latest film is a universe-expanding love-of-genre nostalgia campfest return-to-its-roots. The movie that ultimately became Toy Story? It was originally pitched as a Christmas special short before it transformed itself into one of the most beloved children’s films of all time. Now the whole crew returns to the holiday with their latest, Toy Story That Time Forgot, a 30-minute special which had quite a few folks at San Diego Comic-Con International excited about the prospect of a dinosaur-themed Toy Story tale. Because, I mean, who doesn’t love dinosaurs?

With this latest installment we’ll get not only more Trixie, more toy times, and a heck of a lot of dinosaurs called Battlesaurs, but we’ll also see the return of some old favorites, too. So we chatted with Kristen Schaal (Trixie) and some of the Pixar team to learn just what’s in store for this miniature Toy Story tale.

It’s Got Everything And The Kitchen Sink
If head of story Derek Thompson is to be believed, this special has everything. In fact, it might just make some of you nostalgia-lovers out there explode with mash-up, genre-twisting glee. “It’s an adventure where our Toy Story characters go to a friend of Bonnie’s house on a playdate and they have an unexpected super-adventure [with a] genre, sci-fi, fantasy, dinosaur, barbarian play set.”

Trixie Is The Star Of The Show
“She longs to be played with as a dinosaur,” said Thompson, “[since] she lives in the home of a very improvisational child where she’s been everything other than a dinosaur.”

And She’s Also The Hero!
This dino ain’t no shrinking violet, that’s for sure. “She roars pretty loud and she kicks butt — like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill hard,” explained Schaal. “It’s up to Trixie to help rescue the gang,” Thompson explained.

There Are A New Set Of Characters
Yup — Trixie and T-Rex aren’t the only dinosaurs on the block this go-around. The stars of the new special? The Battlesaurs! “The Battlesaurs are living the only way they know how to live,” explained Schaal. “They don’t know another way to be played with other than by battling.”

And we’d be remiss if we did not mention the adorable AngelKitty (a very rambunctious Christmas ornament taken along for the ride) voiced by a 5-year-old girl. “Everything she says is a little wiser than the age of the voice,” explained director Steve Purcell.

But Buzz And Woody Are Back!
Yup, that’s right — Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are back as the cowboy and spaceman we’ve all come to know and love.

It Pays Slight Homage To The Original
The Battlesaurs and their fearless leader, Reptillus Maximus (Kevin McKidd), are unfortunately unaware of their toy-ness — sort of like Buzz Lightyear’s existential crisis in the original film.

There’s A Lot About Identity And Acceptance
“I think this is going to bring a lot of kids out of the closet!” joked Schaal. So, you know, there’s also that!
