Westeros Is Still Unfriendly in First GAME OF THRONES Season 5 Trailer

Anybody who thinks maybe things would lighten up in Westeros following kings dying, champions getting their eyes gouged out, condemned men committing patricide, and trolls attacking walls needs to realize what the hell show you’re watching. Nothing good seems to be happening in the immediate future of Game of Thrones and that’s exactly the way we like it. (Sidebar: What if King Robert never died? What a boring show it would have been.) With the two final episodes of Season 4 showing on IMAX screens as we speak (I mean, generally; I don’t know what time of day you’re reading this), we also finally(!) have a trailer for Season 5 to go along with it, showing in the cinemas.

The two-ish minute trailer is suitably cinematic and shows little flashes of things we knew were on the horizon, like Oberyn Martell’s understandably pissed-off daughter, armies marching, and Lord Baelish being conniving. Cersei is still not a fan of her little brother, especially now that he’s up and knocked off their dad while sitting on the crapper, and he’s off in a box and having a beard. Jon Snow continues his sojourn into the North against the White Walkers and we get a tantalizingly short look at universal badass Arya Stark picking up her needle sword. And the fact that there’s a creepy-slow version of David Bowie’s “Heroes” playing in the background makes it all suitably legendary and tragic, something the show’s always done.

But the main thrust of the trailer, which seems to be the overall narrative, is that Varys is trying to convince Tyrion to help another ascend to the throne, someone beloved and with an army and a good family name. She may or may not also have dragons. The promise of Tyrion joining up with Daenerys Targaryn is almost too exciting to take.

The trailer is, as yet, not available through any official channels online, but that hasn’t stopped it from being uploaded unofficially. The trailer’s now on the official Game of Thrones Facebook! Watch here if you dare:

Game of Thrones Season 5 premieres Sunday, April 12th on HBO. How much more excited are you about this season? Let us know in the comments below.

Knowing GoT always puts only moderately interesting bits into their commercials and trailers, this can only mean there’s a lot more fun things coming this season.  Plus, Tyrion does look better with the beard.  Should have done that 2 years ago.
Yes, I read the books.  No, I don’t have a problem with the TV show going in a different direction.  If someone made a TV show strictly matching the books it would last 20 years, need 3 times as many actors and cost about 5 times as much to make, and people would STILL gripe about it.  TV has limits, even HBO.  Get over it.  Just be glad it got made by people who can do a good job, and had GRRM on their side.

YES!!!! A Daenerys/Tyrion team up would be incredible. My 2 favorite characters! Though judging by the trailer, Daenerys is going to need some help. Looks like Meereem is in open rebellion against her, which makes sense timing wise.

All in all, so much more excited for this season now. Also, do I spy Margaery and Tommen’s wedding. Can it be? A wedding where no one dies? lol
