Welcome to Earth, INDEPENDENCE DAY Funko Pop! Figures

Sure, why not? There’s a sequel to the 1996 alien disaster movie Independence Day coming out this year, so why wouldn’t Funko add some figures from the original to their never-ending line of Pop! Vinyl figures? The toy conglomerate has announced three new black-eyed, big-headed figures from the Roland Emmerich movie, which boasted a suitably eclectic cast of actors both known and not known. While I personally would have loved a Judd Hirsch or Harvey Fierstein figure just for the “uhh, what?” factor it would bring to any home, Funko (wisely) went with ones that are sure to be favorites. (Gallery below.)

They created vinyls of two of the film’s ostensible main heroes – U.S. Marine pilot, Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and incredibly smart cable repairman Dr. David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum). I think any excuse to make toys of Jeff Goldblum is a good idea. Funko should do a whole line of his characters from movies like The Life Aquatic and Buckaroo Banzai. And remember when Will Smith always had a mustache? That was a time in our nation’s history. Anyway, the third figure is that of one of the alien pilots. If you recall, from the movie, they’re actually much smaller creatures inside a big, giant suit of squiggly-legged armor, allowing the designers to invoke both the typical gray alien look and also the H.R. Giger thang.

There is no specific release date for these, but the official Funko blog lists them as coming out in February. They should just hurry up and open official Funko stores you can go in because they’re already taking over most comic and memorabilia shops. Not a complaint, in fact a “yay!” statement.

Will you be sending these ID4 figures to space (a.k.a. your shelf or desk)? Let us know in the comments below!
