If there is anything that “Weird Al” Yankovic proved with his Grammy-winning album, Mandatory Fun, it’s that the man is able to keep current despite how long he has been in the public eye. Luckily, Yankovic has never been one to let celebrity change him, or how he lives, and the business of comedy requires one to be able to roll and change to keep people laughing. The internet has been a good source of both comedic material, and distribution. For Weird Al and his YouTube channel is always a treat for those looking for something to brighten their day. His most recent video plays on the internet trend of unboxing videos, as Al finally gets his official 2014 Grammy for Best Comedy Album in the mail.
Weird Al covers all the bases in his version of an unboxing video. He covers everything from the product itself, the packaging, and the usefulness of an empty box, to commenting on UPS delivery drivers and the benefits of ordering Grammy Awards off of Amazon. I, for one, have never truly understood the appeal of unboxing videos.
It just strikes me as a strange bit of consumerism-by-proxy that seems too mundane to be interesting enough to watch. Of course, I could just be jealous that some people make more money than I do by simply buying things and recording videos of themselves opening it. To each their own, I guess. Whether you are a fan of unboxing videos or not, you hopefully will enjoy as Mr. Yankovic gives it a little ribbing like only he can.
