Well, this news makes me have all kinds of feelings.

As you may or may not know, I really like SNL. I still watch SNL, I still like a lot of the things that come out of SNL. It’s no secret that the 39th season was a tough one but with the announcement that Chris Pratt would be hosting the season 40 opener, Sarah Silverman (a former cast member in the ’90s) hosting the following week, and an anniversary special planned for February of 2015, it looks like Saturday Night Live is taking this coming season pretty seriously.

Today came the announcement that Cecily Strong would no longer be co-anchoring the Weekend Update desk, a decision that I was frankly happy to hear and even suggested earlier this summer. I think Strong is great, just not the right fit for Update. And then I paused. Wait, Colin Jost’s not leaving Update too? Nope.

Strong will be replaced by comedian and The Daily Show correspondent Michael Che but Jost, inexplicably, if you ask me, is sticking around. The New York Times quotes SNL mastermind Lorne Michaels as saying, “This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now. That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.” Jiminy Cricket, two steps forward, one step back, amiright ladies?

I love Micael Che. He is an excellent decision to co-anchor Update. When he joined The Daily Show he was instantly one of the strongest new correspondents (his new spot on Update means he’s leaving the Comedy Central show) and it is about freaking time that a person of color occupy a spot at the desk. But what’s with the Colin Jost nonsense? Dear Lorne Michaels, dark hair, pale skin and co-head writer does not a Seth Meyers make! And apparently unless one of the women in question is Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, this alleged “new era” at the Update desk comes complete with a big sign on it that reads, “No Girls Allowed.”

I have mad Photoshop skills. But seriously, notice anything these three have in common? THEY’RE THE SAME DUDE!!!

You’re telling me that in all the chemistry reads out of all of the people who work on Saturday Night Live (Che was not a featured player on the show last season but worked behind the scenes as a writer) there was not one woman who had a good “chemistry” with him? I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that. If Michaels went out of his way to bring Che in front of the camera for the purposes of Update, is he seriously trying to say that he couldn’t do the same with a female co-anchor?

I’ve been a staunch defender of SNL through its good times and bad but I haven’t been this upset with one of Michaels’ decisions since he prematurely fired the hilarious Michaela Watkins after only one season in 2009. “Bitch, please!”

Congratulations to Michael Che, but here’s hoping SNL continues to diversify their cast in the upcoming season.
