We Played RESIDENT EVIL 7 VR and Pooped from Fear

Have you ever found yourself playing a Resident Evil game, full of jump scares and puzzle solving and not knowing that the hell is going on, and thinking “I need to double up on having the poop scared out of me. Could someone make this experience far more frightening?” Of course you have; nobody needs to not be petrified from fear. At E3, our own Dan Casey got a taste of that particular brand of fear when he tested out Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 at E3 through the new VR feature. Once plugged in, players get a fully-immersive virtual reality house full of scares popping out of every doorway, and from right behind you!

While the story wasn’t explained in too much detail, Dan did note that his character woke up in some kind of abandoned, dark house full of rotting cattle, teddy bears that fall from the ceiling, bald mannequins that seem to be everywhere and appear from nowhere, and a crazy guy punching you in the face. There’s also puzzles that need solving, but they require keys and VHS tapes, so it’s not like they make it easy for you.

But VR players should also make note that, on top of the usual scary things involved with a haunted house, the experience made Dan a bit nauseated. The motion of full VR movement can’t quite be processed seamlessly by the eye or the brain just yet, so just keep that in mind for the future. Or maybe just keep a barf bucket handy when you play it. It’s your trip, man.

Resident Evil 7 will be released January of 2017 and will be available in a non-VR form as well, so don’t worry too much. Let us know what you think of the game in the comments below!
