Not ones to be outdone by Marvel and their Captain America poster goodness, Sony just dropped a couple of bombshells for you Spidey fans. According to a report in Variety. One’s expected but still exciting, but another is kind of insane.
1) Marc Webb will be back to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3, currently scheduled for release in June 2016.
2) Sony is hoping to establish a model that brings a new Spider-Man film to theaters every year.
Marc Webb coming aboard to direct the third film of his trilogy always seemed like a given, especially when there’s talk this series is currently being planned to include four films rather than the usual three. But the possibility of a Spider-Man film every year is just bonkers. âWe are expanding the Spider-Man universe into The Sinister Six and Venom, so that we have âSpider-Manâ movies every year,â said SPE co-chairman Amy Pascal.
So it seems Sony is looking to establish the shared universe model already happening over at Marvel, in addition to the supposed plan of Lucasfilm to release a Star Wars movie every year â alternating between Skywalker saga films and stand-alone adventures. This is major news, and also a sign that Spidey might not be leaving the studio to join up with The Avengers anytime soon⦠at least not in his current form.
If Sony can pull this off, there might just be a bright future for Peter Parker, even if it is without the aid of The Avengers. Sony has one chance to get this right, one chance to build Spidey his own universe of awesomeness… and it looks like they understand that.
With any luck, the proposed spin-offs will work, and we’ll be treated to much more web-slinger sweetness in the coming years.
A Spider-Man and X-Men team up movie would be Aewsome~
I’m looking forward to Watch the Venom movie, I think this movie will lead to that point.
@Dominic. Spidey has never been a one man show. I could see venom, kaine, kraven, morbius, possably one of the”goodguy” goblins, and werewolf by night getting a shot at being made. All spun out of the spidey comics, why not the movieverse as well. Those were just off the top of my head. I’m sure there are even better options I din’t come up with. Possably even the most horrable ideas in the world have a shot now adays, how about Ben Reily vs the steel spider(shutters and dies in side alittle more)
I’m reserving all judgement until I’ve seen the movies…but I sure hope they can keep it interesting with the ‘movie-a-year’ format. Star Wars and Avengers/Cap/IronMan/Thor/Antman I can see…there is a bigger pool of characters to focus on…but Spider-man is more of a one-man-act.
I liked the amazing spider-man, and I want to watch the sequel. But man, Spidey back in Marvel would be the best.
