Zoe Saldana‘s costuming and makeup for her role as Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films is nothing short of impressive. The makeup team for the movies manages to flawlessly take Saldana from a regular-looking human to a green, ass-kicking Zen-Whoberian. Understandably, it’s quite a process for Saldana and the makeup team to create a believable-looking green woman, and a lot of fans have wondered exactly what that process looks like. In a recent time-lapse video shared to Saldana’s Twitter and on i09, we get to see exactly what goes into making Gamora come to life.

For those who missed it, Saldana’s caption says that this entire process takes her three hours and 38 seconds. Of course, while that is a huge chunk of time–especially since Saldana is essentially just sitting around waiting for the makeup team to work their magic–it certainly isn’t the largest amount of time spent in a makeup chair for a film. To name just a couple of others, John Travolta spent over four hours in the makeup chair to transform into Hairspray‘s Edna Turnblad, and Guardians of the Galaxy‘s own Dave Bautista spent five hours in makeup to transform into Drax.
Even still, Gamora a huge undertaking. Of course, it’s time well spent. Saldana looks amazing on-screen, and Gamora seems to come to life effortlessly. You can get a better look at the amazing work of the makeup team from the Guardians films on May 5, when Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theaters!
