The Internet has officially produced a piece of full-fledged postmodernism: a Batman-themed mash-up of the Hamilton theme song called âBatlexander Manilton.â
25 years ago, could anyone have imagined creating a video of the Dark Knight that was entirely based on a Broadway play? Of course not â most of us wouldnât understand the reference. Whenâs the last time an un-filmed musical transcended the bounds of its theater to this degree? Iâve never seen Hamilton. Odds are you havenât seen Hamilton, either. But thanks to the Internet, we know the musical so well that it can play host to one of the most famous superheroes of all-time.
âHow does a bat-scared orphan / one with a fortune and options / who watched as the barrel of a revolver shot right in the abdomen / his mother and his father near an opera / grow up to battle village rogues and robbers?â ponders the Joker in that now-famous opening cadence.
Alfred, Gordon, Harvey Dent, and Rachel all follow with sharp soliloquies before the Joker returns to ask: âWhatâs your name man?â
âBatlexander Manilton / My name is Batlexander Manilton / But if Iâm ever asked by anyone / Iâm just Bruce Wayne / Iâm just Bruce Wayne.â
Itâs really well-written and features some Broadway-capable voices. And for extra credit, the clipâs director changed his name to Phil Hamilton (just kidding thatâs his real name). The piece was done by newly formed comedy collective, Turtle Cameron.
In the end sequence where each character introduces their relationship to Batman, we get a surprise appearance from Clark Kent, who says: âAnd me. Iâm the damn fool that fought him.â
Excited for Batman v Superman yet? Check out the video above, and let us know what you think in the comments.
