“The cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be.” That quote from Carl Sagan carries weight, and to anyone who watched Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, it holds memories. Cosmos took viewers on incredible journeys that explored space and science and made the most complex of topics easy to understand. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is carrying the torch forward with a successor of the series, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.
The 13-part television show to air on Fox is co-produced by Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan (she worked on the first iteration) and Seth MacFarlane. With Tyson holding the hosting reins like he did in Nerdist’s own StarTalk series, the new Cosmos will explore topics similar to the original series’ subjects but is experimenting with “new modes of scientific storytelling.” A fresh trailer for the series was just released, and it gives me goose bumps.
It’s thrilling to see Sagan’s work in public outreach and education continued in this way. While it won’t have Sagan’s distinctive voice, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey will have his spirit. The series premieres on Fox on March 9th. Will you be tuning in? Let us know in the comments.

Will I be watching? This may well be the best popular science series since James Burke stopped making “Connections”. The real mystery, though, is how they talked Fox into airing it.

This is the first show that I’ve excited about in a long time. I can’t wait to see it. Maybe it will spark some new science literacy in the young people today. I could be the thing lights the spark for a future Neil Degasse Tyson or Mike Brown.
I’m enjoying how close to the spirit of the original Cosmos this seems to be sticking.
