Watch THE GOLDEN GIRLS Reenact CLUELESS Back in 1996

It’s hard to believe, but this month marks twenty years since Amy Heckerling’s seminal teen comedy Clueless hit theaters, making Alicia Silverstone, who played the lead Cher Horowitz, into a household name overnight. The film also gave the world the catchphrases “as if!”, brought knee-high socks back in fashion, and introduced us all to Paul Rudd.

In many ways, Clueless is as popular as ever, since  today more and more people realize what an ahead-of-its-time movie it was. I mean, the joke in Clueless is that the girls are always attached to their cellphones, and look at us all now — attached to our phones, 24/7, like chatty teenage girls. At least the phones are all not the sizes of bricks like they are in the movie.

Also awesome and ahead-of-its-time was The Golden Girls, one of the few eighties sitcoms that has actually aged well and continues to gain news fans thanks to endless late night marathons on the Lifetime and LoGo cable channels. It seems like every day there’s a new Golden Girls themed mash-up video popping up on YouTube, or petitions to get Golden Girls LEGO sets, or something else related to the show.

While sadly only Betty White might remains of the original foursome, the love of all things Golden has never been stronger. So I have to give props to MTV, who, in 1996, brought in three of the former Golden Girls, Betty White, Rue MacClanahan and Estelle Getty, to recreate scenes from Clueless for a skit at the MTV Movie Awards. They accurately predicted Golden Girls fever back when it was just a recently canceled sitcom that your mom loved. Now someone has unearthed this gem and posted it to YouTube, and the world is better for it. My only complaint? No Bea Arthur. She would have been perfect as Cher’s cynical, angry father, am I right??
