In February, before the release of his 2016 album The Life of Pablo, Kanye West held a listening party at Madison Square Garden. With all the new music and special guests who were in attendance, there was a lot to be excited about, but one announcement that got swept under the carpet was that Kanye was making a video game.
The game is called Only One, and it follows Kanye’s deceased mother’s journey to heaven; Donda West passed away in 2007 due to heart disease and post-operative complications following plastic surgery. At the time, Kanye likened the experience to “losing an arm and a leg and trying to walk through that,” and now, he is looking to immortalize his mother’s memory by portraying her as an angel making her journey to heaven, as the Only One trailer that premiered at E3 shows.
The game is a collaboration with animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura, who has also worked on projects with artists like Björk and Grizzly Bear. The trailer (above) doesn’t reveal much about how the game will be played, but it does demonstrate gorgeous impressionist-inspired artwork and shows Donda and other angels ascending through the clouds towards the sun.
There’s no word yet about what platform(s) on which the game will be available, or when it will be released, but Kanye said that making the game was a difficult process, saying he met with people in San Francisco who “dissed the fuck out of [him].”
